Great 6d5n trip to Bukit Lawang & Berastagi
We had a truly great time thanks to Sumatra Orang Utan Treks! They organized a wonderful and very family friendly 6D5N trip for us (we had a 9y old kid with us). We started with the jungle trek with our great and funny guides Yoko and Robert, who carried so much food for us and prepared wonderful food breaks! Needless to say, we saw many monkeys 🦧🐒 and birds 🦚. Then we spent a night in the jungle camp which was a lot of fun and we had great food! On the way back we did the river rafting to Bukit Lawang, which was great fun for us. Our hotel in Bukit Lawang (Green Travelodge) and their restaurant were also very good. We wish we had had more time to stay longer in Bukit Lawang, that's for sure! On the third day we left for Berastagi. On the way we picked up our very knowledgable, friendly and helpful guide Jefry, who showed us Mt Sinabung, a traditional Batak house and the Sipiso piso waterfalls. That was a great experience! The next morning we started very early at 4.45am and went to hike Mt Sibayak. At first we weren't sure whether our 9y old daughter could handle it, but the hike turned out to be very manageable and we needed just a bit more than 1 hour to go up. We were rewarded with great views, a nice sunrise and warm tea & breakfast thanks to Jefry! Don't forget warm clothes as it can get windy up there. 🌀 After that it was time for the hot springs. Many different pools, some too hot for us, others just right. Perfect after the climb! ☺️ Afterwards we spent some time at a Buddhist temple, stopped at a local Barbecue restaurant (very tasty!), went to see a Catholic church and then the fruit market of Berastagi. The next day we were brought back to Medan airport, when our great time in North Sumatra unfortunately was already over! We would like to say thank you so very much to our guides Jefry, Yoko, Robert as well as our very skillful and friendly driver Mr Godek for making all this possible! 🙏🙏🙏 We highly recommend this family friendly tour, Sumatra Orangutan Treks, and their friendly & competent team to anyone who wants to get an authentic impression of beautiful Northern Sumatra! 😊
Response from the operator: Dear Mr, Bjorn & Family 😊 Thank you 🙏 so much for your amazing review and for choosing Sumatra Orangutan Treks for your 6D5N adventure in Bukit Lawang and Berastagi! 🙏😊 We're truly happy to hear that you and your family – especially your 9-year-old daughter – had such a great time exploring the jungle, camping in the wild, and hiking Mount Sibayak! 🦧🌿🏞️ Your kind words about our team – Yoko, Robert, Jefry, and Mr. Godek – mean a lot to us. We’re lucky to have such dedicated guides and drivers who genuinely love sharing the beauty and culture of North Sumatra. It’s also wonderful to hear you enjoyed the variety of experiences – from seeing monkeys and birds in the jungle, to rafting on the Bohorok River, visiting traditional Batak sites, enjoying the hot springs, and tasting local BBQ and fruits! We love creating family-friendly journeys, and it’s great to know your daughter had a memorable time too 🥰 Thank you again for your kind recommendation. It was truly our pleasure to host your family, and we hope we’ll have the chance to welcome you back again one day — maybe for a longer stay in Bukit Lawang next time! 🌄🦧 Warm jungle regards, Heri kibo & Sumatra Orangutan Treks Team 🌿😊🧡🦧

Exceeded Our Expectations In Every Way
We gave Sumatra Orangutan Treks a well deserved 5 out of 5 rating in all areas. To be honest, we expected this tour company to be reputable and reliable based on its excellent ratings on Trip Advisor. To our surprise this family run tour company is truly exceptional and it exceeded our expectations in every way. When our Batik flight’s arrival time was delayed from 9 am to 8pm we thought our tour would have to be shortened by a day but Sumatra Orangutan Treks managed to have a driver meet us at the airport, wait for us to eat a quick dinner in the airport and then drive us to Bukit Lawang that evening so that we could still start the tour on time. The family met us with refreshments at 11 pm for our orientation and then took us to an amazing new cottage in the middle of some very scenic rice paddies. The large bedroom and gigantic upscale bathroom were over the top. The restaurant food in the main building was excellent even for people like us who are vegan. The jungle trek and raft trip the next day ended up being more memorable and adventurous than we expected. We were lucky to spot a mother orangutan and her child early in the trek and another similar pair later in the trek. The spread of exotic fruits and the lunch on banana leaves were great. The next day we saw the bat cave before being driven to Berastagi. That cave and its bats were orders of magnitude more impressive than what we were expecting. This series of caves is not to be missed if you are reasonably fit and agile. A similar world class system of caves in the U. S. would be electrified with man-made steps and guardrails. The Indiana Jones experience of going through these caves was the most unexpected highlight of the tour. Later that day we saw the ghost town near Mount Sibuatan volcano. Before dinner we saw Berastagi with its fruit market, etc. The tour guide spoke excellent English and was very knowledgeable about the local flora and fauna. We got to sample medicinal plants, local fruits and spices in the field and in the market. That night the tour had us stay in a very high-end Berastagi hotel with a rooftop restaurant and a miniature jungle with a Koi pond and bridge that you walked over to reach the reception. I’m not sure why … but we lucked out and got bumped up to an amazing rooftop suite. However, I don’t think this particular room is usually included in the tour. The next day we saw Mount Sibayak volcano which was very scenic with its various steam vents. That trek was actually easier than we expected. We opted to skip the hot springs stop as it was Sunday and it wasn’t directly on the way back to Berastagi. Instead we had a memorable lunch overlooking Berastagi before heading back to our airport hotel. We had a very successful private tour in Sumatra with Sumatra Orangutan Treks where we felt like VIP (very important persons) every step of the way. Even the SUV that we traveled in was new and luxurious. We even received a follow up call from Sumatra Orangutan Treks back in the U.S. shortly after we got back. I’m 71 yrs old and my friend is 63 yrs old. I’ve visited over 100 countries and this tour was among the top three tours I have ever taken. Sumatra Orangutan Treks has definitely earned our highest possible recommendation. Greg Cook Mark Peterson Utah, U.S.A.
Response from the operator: Dear Mr Mark Byron 😊 Thank you so much for your incredible and detailed review ☺️🙏 We are truly honored by your kind words and very happy 😊 to hear that your experience with Sumatra Orangutan Treks exceeded your expectations in every way. It was our pleasure 🙏 to help arrange your late airport transfer so your adventure in could continue smoothly. We are also delighted that you enjoyed the cottage, the food, and the warm welcome from our family team. Seeing wild in the jungle is always special, and we are so happy you had memorable encounters during the trek. We also loved reading your description of the bat cave adventure and your journey around and Mount Sibayak 🌋 Thank you 🙏😊 as well for appreciating our guides, drivers, accommodations, and service throughout the trip. Creating safe, comfortable, and unforgettable experiences for our guests is always our biggest goal. It means a lot to us to hear that after visiting more than 100 countries, you consider this tour among the top three experiences you have ever had. That is truly special for our whole family and team ❤️ We hope 🙏😊 to welcome you back again one day for another adventure in beautiful . Warm jungle regards 🌿 The sumatra orangutan treks team 🦧

The best decision in Sumatra
Hello. Anyone travelling to Sumatra must stop at Bukit Lawang. I travelled with a friend and found this agency. I can only recommend that you go into the jungle for longer than just two days. We booked 6 days and it was just incredible. The more days you book, the deeper you go into the jungle. But be careful, because it gets very strenuous. You walk for a long time each day and also gain a lot of altitude. The whole team was very professional. There were two park rangers, a cook, an expert and a hunter with us. The food was very good and freshly cooked every day. You see almost everything from animals. Have fun and would book it again immediately 👍😎. Greetings Thomas
Response from the operator: Vielen Dank, Herr Thomas und Herr Niklas 😊 für Ihre netten Bewertungen.

Best Tour Company for Bukit Lawang and Beristagi
We booked the 6-day Bukit Lawang & Beristagi tour with Sumatra Orangutan Treks and it was a once in a lifetime experience. The driver met us at the airport and drove us to Bukit Lawang where we were greeted warmly by Heri and his friends at the Sumatra Orangutan Treks HQ. The accommodation there is brilliant and the food and drinks at the bar that run by Didi is fresh and delicious. The next day we began our 2-day jungle trek into Mount Lesuer National Park. Our three guides were Amet and Anton as well as Konong. They were all absolutely amazing throughout the trek and helped with our three year old daughter who they all really bonded with. They are incredibly knowledgable about the jungle and the orangutans. We were very lucky and saw a total of 20 in the wild including an alpha Male on the ground. The night stay in the jungle is basic but comfortable, and shares an area with a lot of other companies by the river. They keep you well fed throughout the trek with fresh fruit and food prepared beforehand. You return to the beginning via river tubing which was really fun and unique. The next day we travelled to Beristagi with Konong and a driver and visited a ghost town of Mount Sibuatan volcano. We also had a tour of the markets from Konong who lives in Beristagi and is very knowledgable. The accommodation we stayed in was again really nice and comfortable. On the fourth day we did a sunrise trek of Mount Sibayak volcano (also offered the option of doing it in the morning instead). It was a relatively easy climb and the views from the top are spectacular. The sunrise got covered in cloud at the very last minute but other than that, it was awesome. It’s quite a dangerous volcano to trek if you don’t have a guide as it is easy to get lost at the summit in low visibility. When we got to the bottom we visited the geothermal spa baths up the road which were nice and basic. After that we returned for breakfast at the hotel followed by visits to a waterfall near Lake Toba and a village with traditional houses. The next day we were driven back to the airport in time for our flight back to Jakarta. Konong was amazing and was brilliant with our daughter through the six days. Overall it was wonderful experience, really well organised, and one of the few tour companies that are owned and ran by Sumatran people. Everyone involved is very friendly, knowledgable and make sure you have a fantastic time. We would thoroughly recommend booking your tours and treks with these guys!

6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking): questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Medan.
How much does 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) cost?
+
Prices start at $799 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Medan usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) take?
+
Plan for about 144 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Medan is not rushed.
Is 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 74 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 10 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Medan, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking)?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 144-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking)?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Medan can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Medan and add a light layer if any part of the 144-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Medan within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Medan?
+
On Outty we rank every Medan experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, 2 Days and 1 Night Ethical Jungle Trek, Monkey Business 3 days - 2 nights Jungle trekking (including rafting). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Medan?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Medan?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
What is included in 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking)?
+
Included: Lunch; Dinner; and Breakfast. Always check the voucher for the final list before you travel.
Does 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) include hotel pickup?
+

What languages is 6 Days Bukit Lawang - Berastagi Tour (2D1N Jungle Treking + Sunrise Hiking) offered in?
