About this experience
At Sumatra Orangutan Trekking, we organize unique and unforgettable jungle trekking eco tours that help preserve the Gunung Leuser National Park and its endangered orangutans. But we offer more than just traditional trekking experiences. Our English-speaking guides are certified by the Indonesia Tourist Guides Association (ITGA-HPI Himpunan Pramuwisata Indonesia), and they enjoy sharing their knowledge with you while they help keep the Gunung Leuser National Park clean and safe for both humans and animals! Our day tours and activities make a difference in the local community. When you purchase one of our trekking tours, 10% of the proceeds go to children in Bukit Lawang who can’t afford to go to school and single mothers who struggle financially. This money helps the children attend school and eventually find jobs that will allow them to support themselves and their families.

Exceptional from start to finish!
One of the best experiences I've had with a travel company. Firstly the communication was fantastic, Dedek responded promptly to all of my many questions & kept in touch throughout our trip. He arranged our hotels before and after our trek in Bukit Lawang when I was struggling to find available family rooms during peak season. He also arranged our transport from Lake Toba and to Medan airport - which made our holiday easy and stress free. Now on to the jungle trek - we decided to go on a private trek so that we could go at our pace & it did not disappoint. Our guides Nasir and Iky were a pleasure to trek with. Nasir our main guide was really knowledgable about the jungle and provided some interesting insights along the way. Our second guide Iky had only been in the job a few weeks & was a great addition to the team. As parents to teenagers it is great to see young people being given training and job opportunities. Thanks to Nasir & Iky we were really lucky to see so many orangutans & other wildlife. A special thank you for the night trek around camp looking for insects - a highlight for the boys in the family. Also just to note - we were very well fed during the trip. Thanks to the whole team for a great trip!
Response from the operator: Dear Holly and the family, Thank you so much for your wonderful and detailed review! 😊🌿 We’re absolutely delighted to hear that your family had such a smooth, memorable, and stress-free experience with us from beginning to end. It means a lot to know that Dedek could help arrange your accommodation and transportation and make everything easier during your trip. ❤️ A special thank you for your kind words about Nasir and Iky. We’re so happy that their knowledge, enthusiasm, and teamwork helped you discover so many orangutans and other wildlife. And we’re especially glad the boys enjoyed the night walk and searching for insects! 🐒🦧🕷️🌙 We also really appreciate your positive comments about giving young local people opportunities to learn, train, and build their careers in tourism. This is something we’re very proud of. And of course, we’re happy to hear that you enjoyed the food and felt well looked after throughout your private trek! 🍛🍉 Thank you again for choosing Sumatra Orangutan Trekking and for taking the time to share your experience. It was a pleasure having your family with us, and we hope to welcome you back to the Sumatran jungle in the future! 🌿💚 Warm jungle regards, Sumatra Orangutan Trekking Team

Why this scores 97
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Medan.
How much does 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra cost?
+
Prices start at $150 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Medan usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra take?
+
Plan for about 72 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Medan is not rushed.
Is 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 97 out of 100, which we label "Peak Performance". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 516 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Medan, and how flexible the cancellation terms are. Scoring 90 or above puts it in the Outty 90+ Club, the top tier of everything we rank.
Can I cancel or reschedule 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 7. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 72-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra?
+
Around 181 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Medan can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Medan and add a light layer if any part of the 72-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Medan within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Medan?
+
On Outty we rank every Medan experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include 2 Days and 1 Night Ethical Jungle Trek, Monkey Business 3 days - 2 nights Jungle trekking (including rafting), 2 Days 1 Night Ethical Jungle Trekking. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Medan?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Medan?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
