About this experience
EcoTravel’s Orangutan trek is the most popular option to discover the Sumatran jungle. On a 2-day jungle trek you will have the big chance of seeing Sumatran orangutans and other wildlife up-close in their natural habitat. In the evening enjoy a delicious “jungle dinner“ on your campsite, then dream away to the melodies of the rainforest and wake up in the morning to the sounds of birds and monkeys. After your jungle trek your “jungle taxi” will take you back to your accommodation in Bukit Lawang by traditional tube-rafting down Bohorok River. Unlike other providers in Bukit Lawang, our sustainable jungle treks and selected Sumatra tours focus on quality and safety rather than quantity. This is why our team has been awarded several times over the past few years e.g. “Eco Friendly Tour Operator of the Year 2018”, “Travel & Hospitality Award Winner” and received the “Hall Of Fame Status” (2019) and "Travellers Choice" (2020/2021) on TripAdvisor.

Once in a lifetime experience - book now!
We had an amazing time on the 2-day/1-night jungle trek, and it will be remembered as one of the best trips of my life. A very special shout out to Pipito and One One for making our experience so wonderful. The process of securing the tour was straight forward and it was easy to communicate with EcoTravel. Our transportation was at the airport as soon as we landed in Medan and we got to the lodge within 3-4 hours. The trek itself was so much fun. Pipito shared so much information about the animals and plants we saw, as well as about the history of Bukit Lawang and the jungle. Our guides ensured we were well fed, hydrated, and safe throughout the hike. Our jungle camping was unique and fun after such a long day. And of course, it was a special highlight to do the jungle taxi back to the lodge the next day. I recommend booking this trek to anyone even remotely interested in it - just make sure you’re prepared to HIKE. I would 100% relive this experience if I could.

Unforgettable experience in the jungle
Our family of 6 joined a jungle trekking tour and were absolutely thrilled. From the very beginning everything was perfectly organized, well prepared, clearly coordinated, and punctual. Our guides Mahendra, Wanwan, Awi, Anton were fantastic, warm-hearted, attentive, and always looking out for everyone (specially ‘mama’ and ‘papa’ who needed some help while walking,-). They all took excellent care of us (our son injured his foot, they treated him and took care of him with so much care), guided us safely with lots of information on animals and vegetation. They created an unforgettable time in the jungle through their positive and family like spirit. The delicious food (thanks Herman, Ari, Agus), the campsite by the river and the whole experience in the jungle were breathtaking. We saw orangutans, different species of monkeys, elephants despite some heavy rain. It was an unforgettable experience with amazing people, perfect organization, delicious food, and indescribable moments in nature. We highly recommend this tour. A big thank you to the whole team – Mahendra, Wanwan, Awi, Anton – for making this adventure so special to us (promise Wanwan, next time we’ll bring some belgian chocolates with us,-))

Very Special
A unique experience for me and my family. Guides Beng Beng and One One were very kind and helpful. Though I had a handicap with asthma on exercise they took care of me. Fantastic food even in the camp! Great atmosphere!

Great jungle experience
We had an absolutely amazing experience with EcoTravel and would highly recommend them to anyone visiting Sumatra. Everyone was incredibly friendly and welcoming, especially our jungle guide Pipito, who made us feel safe and well looked after throughout the trip. We were lucky enough to see several orangutans, and all the guides were fantastic at spotting wildlife and helping us find the best viewpoints. Camping in the jungle was much more comfortable than we expected, the surroundings were beautiful, and the food was excellent. We also loved washing the elephants and joining the local village tour, where we learned about everyday life, local culture, and traditional food production. The staff at the hotel were always helpful and greeted us with big smiles. Overall, this was an unforgettable experience and one of the highlights of our trip to Indonesia!

Why this scores 92
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Medan.
How much does ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang cost?
+
Prices start at $129 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Medan usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang take?
+
Plan for about 48 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Medan is not rushed.
Is ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 92 out of 100, which we label "90+ Club". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 144 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Medan, and how flexible the cancellation terms are. Scoring 90 or above puts it in the Outty 90+ Club, the top tier of everything we rank.
Can I cancel or reschedule ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 6. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 48-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang?
+
Around 50 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Medan can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Medan and add a light layer if any part of the 48-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does ORANGUTAN TREK (2D/1N) by EcoTravel Bukit Lawang start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Medan within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Medan?
+
On Outty we rank every Medan experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include 3-Day Ethical Orangutan Jungle Trek | Bukit Lawang, Sumatra, 2 Days and 1 Night Ethical Jungle Trek, Monkey Business 3 days - 2 nights Jungle trekking (including rafting). The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Medan?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Medan?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
