Amazing Creatures, Good Food, Seasick, Long day
Swimming with the Whale Sharks was amazing, such amazing creatures!! The food the crew provided was so good: homemade ceviche, guacamole, & sandwiches which helped my sea sickness. It's a long boat ride. I liked the beach stop as well. I wish they would take photos instead of videos. Also max of 8 people is a lie, we had 11 people in our group so it made the swimming with the whale sharks take a long time! The whole excursion from doorstop to doorstop took 9 hrs! I definitely recommend swimming with these amazing creatures but expect to be in it for the long haul.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your kind comment! It’s a beautiful experience, and we’re thrilled to know you enjoyed it to the fullest! The reservation capacity is for 8 people, and the boat can accommodate up to 12 people. Playa Norte, where you stopped, is one of the most beautiful beaches in Isla Mujeres. It’s definitely an experience you’ll never forget. Thank you for trusting Turismo Channel!

Bucket list 5* experience
Wholly professional outfit who looked out for the safety of everyone in the group and ensured we all had a good experience with the whale sharks. The boat crew were very respectful of the sharks too, maintaining a safe distance. Amazing ceviche lunch served on mats in the water at Isla de Mujeres afterwards, which felt surreal.
Response from the operator: Oliver was the man. And Brian drove great!! Best times ever!!!! Oliver even saved my wedding ring!! Thank you, Holly

Too many variables!
My first mistake was not taking motion sickness medicine prior to leaving the dock. The boat ride is a very rough (approx 45 min ride) and ended with 3 out of the 4 in our group becoming seasick. There were 2-3 whale sharks that our boat and two other boats circled to keep it in the area. I was feeling horrible when I went into the water and continued dry heaving as the water was very very wavy. The guide left my son behind so when I went back to help him, he took that as me returning to the boat. I never made it close to a whale Shark, but did see one from the boat. My advice: save your money towards something a bit more predictable. There were too many variables in this excursion to make it something worth dedicating a valuable vacation day towards. The afternoon at a beach made it difficult to enjoy after being seasick, but the team did put together some ceviche and guacamole as well as drinks. Word of warning: apply sunscreen!!
Response from the operator: Hello Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with Turismo Channel. We say: Thank you to hear your whale shark experience with us! As you mentioned. Whale sharks are located aprox 45 min away from Cancun, which means open sea. For goverment regulations we cannot take people in a bigger boat to to avoid causing stress to the sharks. About the crew misunderstading. We try to give 2 "jumps" at least for all our customer as long as time & sharks allows. Once again. Thank you for your feedback and we hope you give another opportunity next time at Riviera Maya. Kind regards. Turismo Channel.

Bucket list ✔️ off
Our driver was excellent. Pickup from hotel is very convenient. 45+ minute drive from playa to Cancun. Comfortable passenger van. Our captain did excellent job in giving everyone an opportunity to see and experience the whale shark. Was able to get in twice. Fresh ceviche & guacamole in the waters at Isla Mujeres was fun and different. ✔️ off the bucket list

The good, the bad, and the ugly.
First of all, This is not a complaint to the tour organizers. It is a well run operation with timely pick up, good boat, experienced captain, safety vests, cold water, delicious ceviche, etc. The boat departs from Cancun, not from Riviera Maya, to be aware of. Then, you will spend 1 hour 30 minutes getting to the shark spot. If you find them, there will be about 50 boats circling around the sharks.. You are allowed to go in the water in groups of 2 and you will spend about 5 minutes in the water. You have 2 or 3 attempts. You do not need a wet suit or anything for 3minutes in the water. I wish I knew that before the tour. I felt awful. Poor whale sharks trying to eat, with tourists and boats harassing them, gasoline in the water, noise pollution. Five minutes of fun with huge impact on nature. The sharks need to eat they do not have an option to leave. I was happy to learn that the government plans to shut down the tours. Should have been done long time ago. I Know that there are tours in Africa that do it in a mindful way.

How long does Whale Shark Experience from Playa del Carmen take?

Is Whale Shark Experience from Playa del Carmen worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 56 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 9 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Playa del Carmen, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

How far in advance should I book Whale Shark Experience from Playa del Carmen?
+
Around 3 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Playa del Carmen can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Playa del Carmen and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Playa del Carmen?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Playa del Carmen?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
