The train arrives at the legendary Grgich Hills Estate in Rutherford, home of Croatian-born winemaker Mike Grgich, whose 1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay defeated France's finest at the 1976 Judgment of Paris, put Napa Valley on the global map forever. Disembark & settle in as your Grgich Hills host leads a private one-hour seated tasting. Back onboard, coffee, tea, and dessert are served as the train winds its way south through the valley. By the time the Napa station returns to view, the afternoon feels like the kind that stays with you long after the last glass is empty.

3 HOUR Wine Train Experience with Lunch + 1 Winery Tour
The Napa Wine Train is expensive but memorable, educational & fun. My friend and I chose the 3 HOUR wine train including LUNCH and 1 WINERY TOUR. We were picked up from a “train station” that had a ticket booth, large gift shop and bathrooms. When seated on board the vintage looking train, you will receive a glass of sparkling wine. There are 3 choices for 1st Course; 7 entrees to choose for 2nd Course; and several dessert options plus coffee. The FOOD and SERVICE were excellent. We were lucky to be given a tour of the GRGICH winery. The Founder’s California Chardonnay won in a wine competition in France in 1976, beating the French wines for the first time. At that time, Mr GRGICH worked for Chateau MontElena Winery. I learned about the processing of wine, fermentation in steel vats, and aging in French oak barrels. We tasted several red and white wines, all very good.

A worth it splurge
The Wine Train was magical. From the moment we boarded the train, Claudia and her team took such great care of us. The service was top notch. The food was delicious. The view of the vineyards along the route was beautiful. The narrative from Claudia was very informative and entertaining. We bought a bottle of red from the Napa Valley Wine Train store (thank you, Larry, for your help), and it paired well with our meals. The stop at Grgich Hills Winery was a lovely side trip. Highly recommend!
