Hadzabe - a treasure. Maasi- fool's gold
The first half of the adventure lived up to expectations: great, knowledgeable driver, comfortable vehicle , good local guide and the Hadzabe hunter tribe were very friendly and welcoming. My husband, the hunter really bonded with the hunters. However, the encounter with the Maasi tribe in Leister was a commercialized disappointment. The welcome dance ceremony was touristy and fakey. The tour of the village was a drop-in at one hut and then a forced march through the tribal jewelry fair and a demand that we respect their welcome by spending $100. We came with the expectation of supporting the success of the Maari tribe in protecting their cultural ways while being open to modern society. Being extorted would have been less offensive if Viatour had simply stated that xx $$ fee required. Sad ending to a hoped for cultural exchange. Tour company needs to pick a less "Westernized" family
Response from the operator: Dear Sandra, Thank you very much for taking the time to share your honest feedback about your cultural experience with us. We are truly pleased to hear that you enjoyed the first part of your journey especially your time with the Hadzabe community, your guide, driver, and overall safari arrangements, It means a great deal to us knowing that the experience created genuine connections and memorable moments for you and your husband. At the same time, we sincerely regret that the Maasai village visit did not meet your expectations, We fully understand your disappointment regarding the commercial atmosphere and the feeling of pressure during the handicraft interaction, cultural tourism in some communities can sometimes vary depending on how local villages independently organize their visitor experiences and community markets. At Ibhanilfa Safaris, we deeply value authentic, respectful, and meaningful cultural exchanges, Your comments are extremely important to us, and we are already reviewing this experience carefully with our local cultural partners to ensure future visits feel more natural, informative, and comfortable for our guests. We also appreciate your point regarding transparency around community shopping expectations and contributions, this is valuable feedback that helps us improve how we prepare travelers before such visits. Our intention has always been to support local communities in a sustainable and respectful way while also creating genuine cultural understanding for visitors from around the world. Thank you once again for traveling with Ibhanilfa Safaris and for helping us continue improving the experiences we offer, we truly hope the many positive memories from your journey through Tanzania will stay with you for years to come, and we would be honored to welcome you again in the future.
