What you get

    About this experience

Meet the Guide close by the train station of Pompeii or nearby the archeological site entrance and begin an incredible journey back into the past ! Your private local licensed Pompeii guide will take you on a fascinating tour through this once thriving empire of nearly 20,000 inhabitants that was completely covered in 30 feet of volcanic ash. You will be guided in the baths, villas, theatres and wrestling ground for about three hours. This private tour includes the visit to the Villa of the Mysteries. This wonderful Villa is one of the greatest archeological discoveries of the past century named for the paintings in one room of the residence. This space may have been a triclinium, and is decorated with very fine frescoes. Although the actual subject of the frescoes is hotly debated, the most common interpretation of the images is scenes of the initiation of a woman into a special cult of Dionysus, a mystery cult that required specific rites and rituals to become a member.

    Hugo was a wonderful...

Hugo was a wonderful guide throughout a 2 hour tour of Pompeii and a 1 hour tour to the Villa of Mysteries. He is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. The pace of the tour was great, especially for such a hot day, and Hugo made sure to hit the highlights with the time we had. If you’re looking to learn about the amazing history of Pompeii and related subjects, I recommend this tour.

    Very in depth tour

Very hot & grueling! Hard to hear unless you are right next to the guide. Probably would choose a different tour if I had a do over

Laura was the most informative and helpful tour guide who saw us through the sad history of a thriving culture

Laura was an informative and enthusiastic historian who showed us how the people of Pompeii lived and worked before they died tragically in 79 A.D.

A quality experience, not a boring lecture.

To have an outstanding experience touring the life and times of Pompeii and the Villa of the Mysteries we highly recommend Gennaro Balzano as a guide. It was much more interesting than a boring classroom lecture while walking about. We were able to move at our own pace, ask questions and easily take photos. We prefer private guides. We’ve gone on large group tours and find they are not a good use of our time.

Fantastic private tour with Roberta G!

We booked a private tour of Pompeii and the Villa of Mysteries, and it was worth every penny! I had gone to Pompeii a few years ago and even the small party tours were too distracting, noisy, too many people etc. Our tour guide was Roberta G and she was amazing. She was very friendly, enthusiastic and engaging, not to mention extremely knowledgeable about the history, culture and daily life of Pompeii. We were able to tour Pompeii at our own pace which was great, and Roberta did an outstanding job of bringing to life all of the sites that we saw, including the Gladiator barracks, two theaters, forum, temples, countless bakeries, fast-food places, public baths, brothel, public fountains, amazing fresco, original pipes, 2000 year street graffiti, etc. We toured the Roman cemetery outside the city walls and the unbelievable Villa of Mysteries. Roberta relayed all the information in a really interesting and exciting way which we appreciated. This tour took 3 hours, and Roberta pointed out villas and other spots we could tour after on our own. My whole family really enjoyed this tour, and thought Roberta G. was a perfect guide. I would highly recommend taking this tour.

Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Pompeii.

How much does Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour cost?

    +

Prices start at $331 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Pompeii usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Pompeii is not rushed.

Is Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 65 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 35 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Pompeii, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour?

    +

Around 12 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Pompeii can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Pompeii and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Pompeii and Villa of the Mysteries Private Tour start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Pompeii within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Pompeii?

    +

On Outty we rank every Pompeii experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Premium Minivan Trip from Rome: Pompeii Tour & Lunch in Sorrento, Skip the Line Guided Tour of Pompeii Led by an Archaeologist, Explore Pompeii with an Archaeologist. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Pompeii?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Pompeii?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
