Kyoto at Night
I did quite a bit of research before booking Richard. I knew we were going to finish in Kyoto and wanted something that would really stick with my grown kids. Richard is a local and bilingual. He is superman as we walked our butts off and I nary saw him break a sweat or take a swig of water. He has exceptional knowledge and appeared to have prepared ahead of time for some of what he presented and answered with our kids. We were quite lucky to actually see some geisha during the walk, but doing this in the evening was simply beautiful. He showed us famous places known for the best photographs, explained the stories of the samurai and the divisions, and what led to what shrine being built. He even took us to an evening dessert in a local cafe we would have never known existed and also to a shrine that was open for only a few evenings of the year. In karmic fashion, back in the states, I happened upon a book on the Geisha and have been devouring it ever since this experience with Richard. The geisha really are a direct link to old Japan and something unique to learn about. A tour like this is not to be missed. I hope to one day return and enjoy some more sake with Richard.
Response from the operator: Thank you for such a wonderful and incredibly detailed review. I’m especially touched that you did so much research before choosing the tour and wanted something that would stay with your family beyond your time in Kyoto. What you described is exactly what I hope to create. I put a lot of thought into the places I take guests, the stories I share, and how everything connects, so that you’re not simply seeing tourist spots, but gradually understanding the history and culture behind it. It was a real pleasure having you on the Perfect One Day Tour, then spending the evening with you and your family on this one. I’m grateful you chose my tours, and if you make it back to Kyoto someday, I’d be very happy to share some more stories—and that sake—with you.

Fantastic tour with Mariko!
Mariko was a delightful and incredibly knowledgeable guide. The shrine was an absolute must-see - the most impressive we’ve visited in Japan, with its breathtaking 10,000 bright orange torii gates. Along the way, Mariko shared wonderful local insights, from teaching us how locals say thank you (“ōkini”) to recommending great restaurants. We learned so much and had a fantastic time. Highly recommend this tour, especially with Mariko!

An incredible experience
This was one of the best tours I've ever taken. Richard turned our walk into not just an interesting story, but a book with a plot. He gradually introduced me to the city, showing me different areas, photos, and providing historical information. It was such a deep immersion into the culture that it felt like I was watching a historical movie. Thank you so much for this experience, and I highly recommend it to everyone!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for such a thoughtful review. Reading your description honestly made me smile. I love the way you described the experience as “a book with a plot.” That’s exactly how I try to share Kyoto—gradually building the story so each place adds another layer of meaning to what you’ve already seen. By the end, I hope guests feel they’ve experienced the city rather than simply walked through it. It was a real pleasure spending the evening with you, and I’m truly grateful you chose to join my tour. Thank you again for your recommendation, and I hope our paths cross again someday.

So good I booked again!
Absolutely great experience! Richard is very knowledgeable and shares cultural insights that you wouldn't learn just walking around on your own. He took me to areas and views I wouldn't have found on my own, and knew the best photo spots and what time to go to those spots to avoid the crowds. I learned a great deal more than I would have on my own, and had such a good time that I booked two more tours with him! Highly recommend!
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for this wonderful review. Knowing you enjoyed the experience enough to join me on additional tours is one of the biggest compliments I could receive. I put a lot of thought into choosing the right places at the right time, while sharing the local context that brings Kyoto to life beyond what you can discover on your own. It’s rewarding to hear that those details made such a difference. It was a real pleasure spending those days with you, and I’m truly grateful you chose to explore Kyoto with me. I hope our paths cross again on a future visit.

Richard brought us to...
Richard brought us to multiple interesting locations throughout the Gion district and explained the history of the Japanese culture. Given the itinerary is free-formed, we walked through shrines, quiet streets and famous sites to learn about the meaning behind the structures, different businesses supporting the geisha ecosystem, and the history of the religions practiced in Japan. Richard is very knowledgeable and thorough with his explanation. Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the Japanese culture and the geisha industry. Wear comfortable shoes.
Response from the operator: Thank you for such a thoughtful review. One of the things I enjoy most is connecting the different pieces of Kyoto—its history, religion, architecture, and the geisha world—so they tell a larger story rather than feeling like tour stops. I’m glad that approach made the experience worthwhile. It was a pleasure sharing the evening with you, and I truly appreciate the recommendation.

The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kyoto.
How much does Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience cost?
+
Prices start at $120 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kyoto usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience take?
+
Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kyoto is not rushed.
Is Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 86 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 225 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Kyoto, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience?
+
Around 79 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kyoto can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kyoto and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Kyoto 5-Star Geisha Night Walk: Small-Group Authentic Experience start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kyoto within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Kyoto?
+
On Outty we rank every Kyoto experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Kyoto : Gion Make Your Own Chopsticks with Engraving Option, Award-Winning Authentic Ramen Making Experience in Kyoto, Hidden Kyoto E-Biking tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Kyoto?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Kyoto?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
