A Hidden Gem 20 Minutes from My Front Door
I've lived in Sonoma County for years and somehow had no idea Safari West existed until about a week before we visited. That alone should be a crime. My niece and I went last summer and were genuinely blown away. The property is impressive -- giraffes, rhinos, ostriches, storks, and more, spread across what feels like a real savanna tucked into the California hills. The animals have real space and the whole experience feels nothing like a traditional zoo. The highlight for both of us was riding on top of the open-air truck. We figured it would be a nice touch -- it turned out to be the best part of the whole day. Up there you're eye-level with the giraffes and close enough to the action that it never feels like a tour. Our guide knew the animals individually and kept things lively and educational without being lecture-y. If you're anywhere in the North Bay and haven't been, stop waiting for a reason and just go. It's a legitimately world-class wildlife experience hiding in plain sight off Highway 116. Worth every penny, and we're already planning a return trip.

MUST VISIT
Our visit to Safari West was truly unforgettable, and it was one of the most special experiences I’ve ever shared with my son. From the moment we arrived, we were immersed in an environment that felt both adventurous and thoughtfully designed, with incredible animals, stunning scenery, and a real sense of care for conservation and education. Seeing my son’s excitement as he spotted giraffes, zebras, and rhinos up close was priceless—this is the kind of experience that creates lifelong memories. My favorite were the Two female ostrich. They definitely gave us a good show. What truly elevated our visit, though, was our guide Killan. She was absolutely phenomenal and made the entire safari come alive. Her knowledge was impressive, but what really stood out was her enthusiasm, warmth, and ability to connect with both adults and kids. She explained everything in a way that was engaging and easy to understand, answered every question with patience and passion, and made sure everyone felt included and excited. My son was completely captivated by her stories and insights, and it was clear how much she genuinely loves what she does. Killan’s energy, professionalism, and kindness turned a great experience into an exceptional one. Safari West is a must-visit, especially for families, and I cannot recommend it highly enough. If you’re lucky enough to have Killan as your guide, you’re in for something truly special. We left with full hearts, amazing photos, and memories we’ll be talking about for years to come. Thank you, Safari West—and especially Killan—for such an incredible experience! PS: we will definitely be planning a future trip to come back and go glamping.

A safari close to home!
This has been on my bucket list and Santa made it happen this year. Gina was our tour guide and she was fantastic! A true immersion experience with animals so much closer than anywhere else, and free to roam. Started off in a fun truck with great views all Around, finished in foot for an easy hike. My favorite part was seeing Ozzy the new baby rhino!! We got lucky with beautiful weather. We also opted for the lunch after which was pretty good. I’ll be back again in the summer and a picnic.

Don't miss Safari West
A great place to visit with family or friends. The staff is amazing and the tour is one of the best that I have been on. I've been to zoo's but this experience far exceeds visiting a zoo. It's privately owned and operated and is an amazing place in how their employees play such an important role in the preservation and care of these animal. Many packages to pick from as well as the overnight package in one of the tent homes. The perfect place for kids to learn about endangered species and the work that goes into preserving these amazing animals.

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Santa Rosa.
How much does Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West cost?
+
Prices start at $110 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Santa Rosa usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Santa Rosa is not rushed.
Is Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Santa Rosa, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West?
+
Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Santa Rosa can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Santa Rosa and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Classic Safari Adventure at Safari West start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Santa Rosa within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Santa Rosa?
+
Santa Rosa is the practical base for Sonoma County: winery tours through Russian River and Dry Creek, hot air balloon flights over the valley, and redwood trips to Armstrong Grove. On Outty we rank every Santa Rosa experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Best E-Bike Rental! Wine country fun, Russian River Kayak Tour at the Beautiful Sonoma Coast, Sonoma County Join-In Group Wine Tasting Tours. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Santa Rosa?
+
April to June and September to October, with harvest in September. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Santa Rosa?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
