A place everyone should visit — to remember and never forget

It is difficult to put a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau into words, but I truly believe it is a place everyone should see at least once. It is important to remember, and never allow ourselves to forget, one of the greatest horrors of the 20th century.Many of the original blocks, barracks and remains of the gas chambers have been preserved, which makes the experience even more powerful. Walking along the same paths that, less than a century ago, led so many people toward suffering and death is deeply moving and difficult to comprehend. The tour itself was extremely well organized. We were picked up directly from our hotel, accompanied throughout the journey, and had knowledgeable guides at both Auschwitz and Birkenau who focused on the most important parts of the museums and historical sites. The entire experience lasted around seven hours, but it never felt tiring in the usual sense. The emotions are so intense that physical tiredness becomes almost irrelevant. It is a difficult visit, but an essential and unforgettable one.

Good Service After Uncertainty

Overall the trip experience was good. Since there were no individual tickets available we purchased transportation and pick up along with the official Auschwitz ticket from Krakow Auschwitz tour company through Trip Advisor. We went with a small group of 8 in a van. Having to meet the tour much earlier in the morning than we were told when we bought the tour and after the refund window had closed seemed a bit deceptive, but we wanted to do the tour badly enough that we accepted the unexpected early departure at 6:05 in the morning from Krakow. Until we were actually picked up I wasn't sure about whether we had purchased a valid ticket or not, given the uncertainties around our departure time. The individual pickups at our place of lodging added value to the services of the tour operator. The driver and organizer was friendly and did a good job. He drove safely and with care for we eight passengers. The visit to Auschwitz is a sobering experience and I felt the tour operator and the guide furnished by the Auschwitz museum acted appropriately for the type of activity. it was an awful and awesome privilege to remember some of the fearful history of World War II.

Change to 6am a repeat trick?

Good driver and museum guide – but unacceptable last-minute change to advertised pick-up time We booked this Auschwitz-Birkenau tour through Tripadvisor because the listing stated that hotel pick-up would be between 7:00 AM and 10:00 AM. The afternoon before our tour, we were suddenly informed that we would instead be picked up at 6:00 AM, with entry to Auschwitz at 7:40 AM. This was not a minor adjustment. A 6:00 AM departure is outside the advertised pick-up window and significantly changes the practical conditions of the trip. When we questioned the change, we were told that the Auschwitz Museum was fully booked and had changed our entry time because of high demand. Our driver, Artur, later told us that he had contacted the office and that, according to them, the timing was determined by the museum, which sometimes changes entry times at the last minute. However, in the original communication informing us about the change, the operator also stated that the tour would start earlier in order to “help you avoid large crowds and long queues.” To us, those sounded like two rather different explanations for the same last-minute change. The 6:00 AM departure also meant that we could not use the breakfast already included in the price of our hotel, as breakfast did not begin until 7:00 AM. We were subsequently offered lunch boxes by the tour company for an additional 60 PLN per person. We asked whether these could be provided complimentary as a small gesture of compensation for the last-minute change, but this was declined. Fortunately, our hotel was extremely helpful and prepared takeaway food for us, so we avoided having to pay another 120 PLN for food. I want to make it very clear that our criticism is not directed at our driver, Artur. He was polite and helpful, the drive went smoothly, and he contacted the office on our behalf when we raised our concerns. He also made it clear that he had no authority over scheduling or compensation. The guide at Auschwitz-Birkenau was affiliated with the Museum itself rather than the tour operator. Our criticism therefore does not concern the museum guide or the actual guided visit. Our criticism is specifically about the booking process, transparency and the last-minute change to the conditions under which the tour was sold. If a departure as early as 6:00 AM is a realistic possibility, customers should be told this clearly before they pay. A tour advertised with a hotel pick-up window of 7:00–10:00 AM should not suddenly become a 6:00 AM departure the afternoon before, when travellers have almost no realistic opportunity to make alternative arrangements. After receiving the change, we looked more closely at recent reviews and found other travellers describing similar experiences with very early departure times being communicated shortly before their tours. For such an important and emotionally significant visit, the booking arrangements should be much more transparent. One final warning for other travellers: we originally found and selected this tour following a recommendation from ChatGPT. Only after the last-minute change did a more thorough search uncover similar complaints from other travellers and warnings from the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial concerning problems that can occur when booking through external tour operators. In our case, the AI recommendation therefore failed to uncover information that would have been highly relevant to our decision before booking. So whether you find an Auschwitz tour through Tripadvisor, Google or an AI recommendation such as ChatGPT, do not rely solely on the recommendation. Check the operator’s most recent reviews yourself and ask before paying whether your actual Auschwitz entry time has been secured and whether the advertised pick-up window can subsequently be changed to a very early morning departure. The visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau itself is something we are very glad we experienced. Our disappointment concerns how the tour was sold and how the arrangements were changed at the last minute.

We fully understand that receiving a confirmed pickup time of 6:00 AM when you had expected a later departure was frustrating, particularly when it affected plans you had already made for that morning. We would, however, like to clarify how the scheduling process works. The final entrance time to Auschwitz-Birkenau is allocated by the Museum, and tour operators do not have complete control over the exact hour assigned. During periods of very high demand, entry times can be changed or confirmed shortly before the visit, which in turn requires us to adjust the transportation schedule accordingly. The two explanations you mention are not intended to contradict one another. Your earlier departure was necessary because of the Museum entry time assigned to the group. At the same time, an early entry naturally has the additional advantage of arriving before the Memorial becomes significantly busier and avoiding some of the largest queues. The Museum schedule determines the departure; avoiding heavier crowds is simply one benefit of an early allocation ⏰. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee a specific Museum entrance time before the Museum has finalised the allocation. This is also why the final pickup information is communicated the day before the tour as soon as the schedule is confirmed 📱✅. We are nevertheless very sorry that the change caused inconvenience and affected your expectations of the booking.
