About this experience
We’ll start our journey at Akumal Beach, a tropical paradise known for its beautiful sea turtles. I’ll introduce you to some local friends, and after gearing up with snorkels and life jackets, we’ll take a short boat ride out to the reef. You’ll have the chance to snorkel among eagle rays, colorful fish, squid, and the amazing sea turtles that call this place home. From the sea, we’ll make our way into the jungle to a private reserve that shelters a spectacular underground river. With flashlights in hand, we’ll walk through a cave decorated with stalactites before arriving at a hidden cenote with crystal-clear waters—perfect for a refreshing swim and a quiet moment surrounded by nature. We’ll wrap up the adventure with a stop at one of my favorite local taquerias, where you can enjoy a variety of authentic Mexican tacos, freshly made and full of flavor.

Caring and personable
We had an amazing experience today with Josh at Pixan. The night before our trip my husband came down with food poisoning. I debated canceling but Josh told me not to worry, he would help me with my kids (5 & 7 years). He engaged us all with information about the area and spent a lot of time chatting my son about futbol, gems, Mayan lore, etc and he swam with my son while I swam with my daughter. It wouldn’t have been possible for us had he not stepped in. The cenotes was wonderful as the location booked is private and managed so that you really have the place to yourself. Super special when you turn off your lights and are in complete darkness and quiet. The Pixan experience was respectful (to all people and pachamama), tailored, easeful and joyful. Highly recommend.
Response from the operator: I’m very happy to hear that Josh was able to step in and make the day special for you and your kids. That’s exactly the kind of care and flexibility we aim for. We really appreciate your recommendation and hope to see you all again soon!

Outstanding Private Tour
We were 2 couples looking for a private tour of our own options, Tulum ruins, lunch, snorkel in Akumal, and underground cenoté, one not open to bus tours of people. Diego was exceptional. Driver in our own comfortable Mercedes van. We were already having the greatest day, then the underground caves that opened to cenoté was beyond amazing! We can’t thank them enough for this life experience. About $200US/person. Well worth it

Choose Pixan
I cannot speak highly enough of the Pixan team. I worked via What's App to discuss options, book and coordinate pickup. After booking online, I made an error on the date that the team caught and quickly fixed. When the weather wasn't looking great to get us snorkeling, the team reached out and offered options to either stick with the same date and an alternative tour or push the date to try and hope snorkeling would open. Such personalized service. The morning of our tour, we walked up from our breakfast where Tonya and Felipe were waiting for us and swept us off on our private adventure while groups of other guests were waiting for their bigger buses. Each part of the tour was amazing, we never had to wait for any of the adventures which kept the day moving smoothly. Our Akmul guide Gil took us out to see gorgeous fish in the reef and multiple sea turtles. The cenote and zipline adventure were fantastic experiences and followed by our favorite meal while in Cancun. If you are deciding between group v private tours, Pixan is worth every penny. Excellent customer service at every step of the way. Thank you!
Response from the operator: Wow—thank you so much for this beautiful review! 🌞 It truly means the world to our whole Pixan family. We’re so happy we could help sort everything out with your booking and the weather (Mother Nature keeps us on our toes sometimes!), and we’re thrilled you felt the love in every part of your experience. Tanya, Felipe, and Gil had the best time showing you around—especially those magical turtles and the cenote fun! And we’re so glad that meal hit the spot. We always aim to make every tour feel smooth, special, and full of heart, so knowing you felt that really makes our day. Thanks again for choosing us—and for trusting us with your adventure. Sending you a big virtual hug from all of us here at Pixan. Hope to see you again one day! 🐢💚✨

I will use this company again!
It was all fantastic! Diego and Erick were both great guides, drivers and hosts. The whole day was perfect. On-time, informative and fun talks during the ride, the whole Temezcal experience was unique and interesting. I would do it again! Lunch was fresh and delicious. We arranged transportation for a group of friends for a night out in Tulum after and that was convenient and smooth as well! Thanks Pixan!

Why this scores 61
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Playa del Carmen.
How much does Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $160 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Playa del Carmen usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour take?
+
Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Playa del Carmen is not rushed.
Is Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Playa del Carmen, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 1. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 6-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Playa del Carmen can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Playa del Carmen and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Akumal Snorkeling and Underground River - Private Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Playa del Carmen within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Playa del Carmen?
+
On Outty we rank every Playa del Carmen experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include VIP Chichen Itza Private Tour, VIP Tulum Private Tour, Chichen Itza Private Tour VIP. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Playa del Carmen?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Playa del Carmen?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
