Mayan culture and history—and some cool monkeys!

Walking through a protected Mayan jungle that is home to about 200 spider monkeys who live (and cavort through the trees) in “families” of 10-20 each is a unique experience. Having Louie, grandson of one of the three original owners skillfully lead us through paths that passed the tops of ancient Mayan stone temples now mostly buried and seeing small Mayan villages and their villagers (and carefree dogs) made us deeply appreciate the culture, history, religious beliefs, astronomical knowledge of the Maya. Our driver and guide, Rodrigo, met us at our hotel and had a deep knowledge of the areas we drove by to get to the Preserve, and then showed us a huge termite nest, an unusual bird nest, ant paths through the jungle and trees from bougainvillea to cobe, to cactus, palms, elephant, and one with curative sap and another with caustic sap. We even had a coconut drink served in a coconut shell, from a Mayan vendor. This is a great way to spend an afternoon in the Yucatan!

Response from the operator: Hi Nancy, Thank you for your feedback! We are happy you enjoyed your tour with us so much and we hope to see you again! Gracias!

    Just try it

Huge thanks to Rodrigo! He is incredibly kind, knowledgeable, and full of humor. He even switched to French for us and did a great job. Hiking in the jungle was my favorite part and definitely worth it. You need to be able to walk through a few rough patches, so that part maybe not for everyone but I am sure Rodrigo and the kind local Maya guides would make it easier for you if needed. Yuum bo'otik, Rodrigo!

Response from the operator: We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed our Wild Monkey Tour with Rodrigo so much! We hope to see you again, thank you!!

Wonderful half day activity outside Tulum

Rodrigo was a wonderful, thoughtful guide - he was on time, a great driver, and very knowledgeable and funny. He clearly cared about the local community and had great relationships with the various people we encountered along the way. He offered bathroom breaks, snacks, stops, etc. with no pressure. Before pickup they were very responsive via text and it was super easy to arrange everything. Highly recommend doing this as a half day activity!

Response from the operator: We are thrilled to hear you enjoyed your tour with us so much! We hope to see you again!!

    Monkeys in their native habitat

Rodrigo was an excellent tour guide. He is very knowledgeable in all aspects of life in Yukatan peninsula. He and his partner guided us through the jungle where we saw four spider monkeys, and four or five howler monkeys, as well as some birds. We loved seeing them in their native habitat and learning more about Mayan culture. We highly recommend this tour.

Response from the operator: We are happy to hear you enjoyed your tour with Rodrigo so much! We hope to see you again. Thank you!

    Amazing Experience. Exceeded Expectations.

The tour was great!! Rodrigo was a wonderful guide who went above and beyond, and we learned a lot about the history and nature of the area. We got to see both Spider and Howler Monkeys, including a loud territorial dispute between the two. We had a very memorable experience. Would definitely do it again.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your feedback! The wild monkeys are always a joy to see. We hope to see you again for another adventure!

Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day): questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tulum.

How much does Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day) cost?

    +

Prices start at $174 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tulum usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day) take?

    +

Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tulum is not rushed.

Is Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day) worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 71 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 70 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Tulum, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day)?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day) suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 4-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day)?

    +

Around 25 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tulum can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tulum and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Wild Monkey Tour (Private, Half Day) start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tulum within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tulum?

    +

On Outty we rank every Tulum experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tulum Ruins, Turtles in Akumal and Cenote tour, Tulum Guided Tour, Magical Cenote, Lagoon Snorkeling and Beachside Lunch, Chichén Itzá, Cenote and Valladolid with Lunch and transportation. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tulum?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tulum?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
