About this experience
This is a relaxing private day trip from Bucharest to the Transfagarasan area. The Transfăgărășan is a paved mountain road crossing the Carpathian Mountains, is the second-highest paved road in the country with an altitude of 2,042 metres (6,699 ft). The road also provides access to Bâlea Lake a glacier lake situated at 2,034 m of altitude. Here we will benefit from the fresh air and low temperature, admire the view of Trasnsilvania and have lunch. On the way back we will admire Bâlea waterfall, we'll stop at the Vidraru Dam to refresh us. It is very possible to meet brown bears on the route. On our way we will be able to see on a mountaintop a fortress built by Vlad the Impaler. This is Poienari fortress.

Brown Bears Romania
Sebastian was an Excellent driver and guide. We were lucky to see brown bears on side of road.

The scenery is stunning...
The scenery is stunning and having a driver allows everyone to relax and enjoy the experience. There is so much more flexibility on a private tour so we were able to adjust the schedule for the weather and our preference on where to spend most time and where to eat. Octavian spoke excellent English, was very knowledgeable and personable. The car was spotlessly clean and comfortable.

Great experience with...
Great experience with Octavia as our guide and driver. It’s a long day but we got to see all of the sights and bears along the way. We’d have a couple of providers cancel on us because it would be “too busy” being a Sunday in August but with Octavia we head straight for the lake and only sat in a very small amount of traffic waiting to exit the tunnel. It was brilliant, Octavia was really informative and a great driver too. Definitely recommend!

Great drive through the...
Great drive through the Carpathian mountains. Bears galore & great, easy to understand commentary from our driver/guide , Alin. The views from Balea Lake area at the end of our drive ( 2000m + above sea level) were spectacular. Don’t miss this tour.

Nice drive if you had a safe driver
Most memorable was the driver not wearing a seat belt, the driver texting and talking on his phone the entire return trip. I think he forgot he was at work. We thought him texting while driving was totally unprofessional not to mention illegal, If you get a good driver the views are lovely and treehouse restaurant for lunch was excellent.
Response from the operator: Thank you for your feedback. We're sorry to hear about your experience with the driver’s behavior. Safety is our top priority, and we take these concerns seriously. We’re glad you enjoyed the views and the treehouse restaurant. We take all feedback seriously, and we will continue to ensure our drivers uphold the highest standards of safety and professionalism. Thank you and we wish you best travels

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Bucharest.
How much does Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest cost?
+
Prices start at $231 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Bucharest usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest take?
+
Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Bucharest is not rushed.
Is Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 35 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Bucharest, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest?
+
Around 12 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Bucharest can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Bucharest and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Transfăgărășan Highway & Balea Lake - Private Tour from Bucharest start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Bucharest within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Bucharest?
+
On Outty we rank every Bucharest experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include The Real tour of Communism, Bucharest Highlights Walking Tour, Top Gear Road, Small-group max 7 pax with Pick-up, Transfăgărăşan. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Bucharest?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Bucharest?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
