What you'll see and do
St. Peter's Basilica
Step inside the world’s most famous church and see Michelangelo’s masterpiece up close. St. Peter’s Basilica, the heart of the Catholic world, holds treasures such as Michelangelo’s Pietà, Bernini’s towering bronze canopy over the papal altar, and a vast marble interior glowing with gold. Then climb to the top of the dome, designed by Michelangelo and rising about 136 meters above Rome. Pause at the inner gallery to look down on the basilica floor, then continue up to the rooftop terrace and the outer dome for sweeping views over St. Peter’s Square, the Vatican Gardens and the Roman skyline. The climb includes narrow, steep stairs, and a lift covers only part of the way. Modest dress is required: shoulders and knees must be covered.
