About this experience
Come explore the incredible world of the whale shark and enjoy the experience of a lifetime with the Whale Shark Discovery. The Whale Shark conveys peace and tranquillity; swimming alongside this gentle giant of the sea in Mexico is an experience to remember and share again and again. The whale shark is completely harmless to humans, it is actually a very docile and curious creature. In summertime hundreds of whale sharks swim to the waters surrounding Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and Isla Holbox, to feed on plankton where the Caribbean Sea meets the Gulf of Mexico. From end of May to middle of September, you will have the remarkable opportunity to swim and snorkel with these amazing animals, in an area teaming with sea life. Whale shark sightings 100% guaranteed!

Shop around - Dune are only an agent and over charge (and mislead). Book direct with the tour providers. Read on.
Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres Playa del Carmen 961299838 Positives Saw whale sharks and swam with them Negatives - Dune charges a surplus as they are not a direct provider, only an agent. - It is cheaper (US$65 cheaper per person at the time of writing) to book directly with providers like Eco Tour Adventures who actually picked us up and took us on the swim. - Dune Mexico Blue do not state a wetsuit is NOT included in their not included list on their website and actively ask you for your wet suit size along with fin size when they ask for other essential organisational details like date of birth, collection hotel for transfers, dietary requirements. Ergo implying provision of a wetsuit. We only found out later after the swim that the provider charged us US$20 each per wet suit without providing the information at the briefing (which they claim they did but none of the 6 English speakers on the tour heard it). - I don’t like leaving negative reviews and tried to solve the issue directly with Dune Mexico Blue but the manager (Louise) wrote back with an extremely abrupt email denying any misinformation on their part and washing their hands of it. There are about 20 other boats out on the water at the same time so there are clearly plenty of other providers for this excursion. All saw the sharks and swam with them. So all provide a similar service. My advice would be to shop around.
Response from the operator: Hello, We're sorry about the experience you had with us. Concerning the price, there are indeed more or less expensive services, our prices are not hidden and are public on our website. We have taken your feedback very seriously, and we will improve our process to indicate that the wetsuit is not included. To remember : the life jacket is mandatory and included.

Whale sharks with Secretoo
We snorkelled with whale sharks. It was super impressive. Secretoo is the company we were doing business with, they were once again up to it!
Response from the operator: Je suis heureux que vous ayez eu une bonne expérience. Nager avec le requin baleine est magique! J'espère que vous reviendrez.

Excellent shark whale experience!
Excellent experience despite the bad weather we got. Nuria our guide was always helpful and making her outmost to assure this nice experience explaining all the details and providing confidence to all the participants. Thanks Nuria and the captain for this excellent day!

Outstanding experience
Let’s begin with this being on my wife’s bucket list ( not really my bag) from the moment we got into the van Patricio ( pato) was a joy to be with. He was informative and personable. Once on the water he gave us a tutorial on the equipment and the areas history The crew was as professional as a group as I have met. The swimming with the animals was an outstanding experience I am now super glad I had the chance to participate in Would definitely Recommend this crew for the outing.

Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Playa del Carmen.
How much does Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres cost?
+

How long does Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres take?
+

Is Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 53 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.3/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Playa del Carmen, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres?
+

Is Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres suitable for kids and families?
+

How far in advance should I book Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Playa del Carmen can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Playa del Carmen and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Snorkeling with Whale Sharks - Isla Mujeres start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Playa del Carmen within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Playa del Carmen?
+
On Outty we rank every Playa del Carmen experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include VIP Chichen Itza Private Tour, VIP Tulum Private Tour, Chichen Itza Private Tour VIP. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Playa del Carmen?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Playa del Carmen?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
