What you'll see and do

  1. Castelo dos Mouros

Moorish Castle – Sintra Monuments Surrounding two hills in Sintra, the Moorish Castle dates back to the early days of the Moorish occupation of the Peninsula – the 8th century. After many attempts, it was finally taken by D. Afonso Henriques, the first king of Portugal, in 1147, and the city’s first Christian chapel was built, dedicated to Saint Peter of Penaferrim. During the Romantic period, in 1860, the walls were restored under the supervision of D. Fernando II, husband of D. Maria II, who planted trees in the surrounding areas and gave new dignity to the old medieval ruins. Highlights include the Moorish Cistern inside and the so-called Royal Tower. Located about 3.5 km from the historic centre of Sintra.

  2. Park and National Palace of Pena

Pena National Palace and Park Museums and Palaces Pena National Palace Visit the fantastic Pena Palace, an example of 19th-century Romanticism in Portugal. Situated at the top of Monte da Pena, the palace was built on the site of an old monastery. It was commissioned by D. Fernando de Saxe Coburgo-Gotha, who married Queen Maria II in 1836. Falling in love with Sintra, he decided to buy the convent and surrounding lands to build a summer palace for the royal family. A restaurant has been set up in one of the wings of the palace, with a terrace offering beautiful panoramic views over the Sintra Mountains and the coast.

  4. Sintra National Palace

National Palace of Sintra Museums and Palaces The National Palace of Sintra is unique among Portugal's medieval royal palaces and the most distinctive building in the town of Sintra. Since the country's earliest dynasties, Sintra has been a favourite haunt of Portuguese kings and queens, although the palace we see today was the initiative of King João I, who rebuilt it, and King Manuel I, who enriched the building's decorative character and added a new wing. The decoration is remarkable, being a combination of various artistic styles that depended on the tastes of the kings who lived here, and designed to give different names to the various rooms. In particular, visitors are drawn to the Swan Room, the Weapons Room, the Magpie Room or Reading Room and the chapel. On the outside, the most striking and distinctive element of the palace are the two large conical chimneys in the kitchen, each 33 metres high, today adopted as the symbol of Sintra.

  5. Quinta da Regaleira

Regaleira Palace and Estate Museums and Palaces Quinta da Regaleira is located very close to the historic centre of Sintra, and is one of the most enigmatic tourist attractions in Sintra. Quinta da Regaleira was built at the beginning of the 20th century by the millionaire António Augusto Carvalho Monteiro (1848-1920), who managed to make one of his dreams come true here with the help of the architect and set designer Luigi Manini (1848-1936). Surrounded by lush vegetation, Regaleira Palace is a fascinating discovery. The palace was built in a romantic revivalist style, imitating Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance architectural and decorative forms, mixed with mythical and esoteric symbolism. Special mention is reserved for the Chapel of the Holy Trinity, where visitors can descend a spiral staircase into the crypt to discover the monumental initiation well which, at the bottom, leads through a grotto to a stunning lake hidden in the middle of the gardens.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
