    Guides good but too rushed

This is actually two different tours so you finish up with salt mine tour and then back to original meeting point to get on another bus to head out to mountains again. Granted its different area still seems like a lot of driving around. Salt mine was nice experience. Two slides and a cool little train down into mountain. Good information but once you finish you are quickly hustled back on board and off to another stop for a too quick stop for lunch or shopping. Then back on board to the sound of music tour which was cool but seemed so rushed at many of the stops. Singing on board bus was fun. I’d say these need to be individual tours with longer stops at the cute little towns. Guides were great! Drivers are talented on the narrow winding roads.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your detailed feedback. We’re glad to hear that you enjoyed the Salt Mines experience, the fun of singing along on the Original Sound of Music Tour, and especially the excellent work of our guides and drivers. You are correct that this combination consists of two separate half-day tours, with a return to Salzburg in between. We understand that this can make for a long day with quite a bit of travelling, and that some of the stops may have felt too short or rushed for you. As both tours cover a number of highlights within a limited timeframe, keeping to the schedule is important, but we certainly appreciate your wish for more time to enjoy the towns and stops at a more relaxed pace. Thank you again for your constructive comments and for your kind words about our team. We truly appreciate your feedback and hope that, despite the busy schedule, you took home many wonderful memories from your day with us.

A fun, if limited, tour if you have one day or less in Salzburg

If you’re like me, you might be considering the salt mines tour as an add-on to the marquee Sound of Music tour. In practice, I found the mine tour much more enjoyable and memorable. Frankly, the Sound of Music tour was rather disappointing. I think they’ve been doing it long enough that they’re really just going through the motions each day at this point. My guide, although animated, didn’t even announce what we were going to see at each stop before we got off the bus. And what we did see was rather limited. Of course, it’s easy to enjoy time in Mondsee Basilica like we did, but you can always drive yourself there. All other stops were either brief looks (the gazebo, Leopoldskron Palace), or, I’m not kidding, drive-bys from afar (Mozarteum Music Academy, Noonberg Abbey). In fact, we drove by the former in both directions so fast and so far away (across a quad) that it was nearly impossible to take a photo with any clarity. We didn’t visit the musical amphitheater or anywhere that might have required admission. It’s as if the tour organizers, despite painting their bus to feature their marquee tour, put hardly any effort into actually securing any kind of meaningful access to the locations, and opted to focus on low-hanging fruit. So, if your sightseeing time is very limited, then go for it. But if you have a day or two to explore on your own, you’ll probably do much better.

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about both of your tours with us. We’re very pleased to hear that you found the Salt Mines Tour so enjoyable and memorable. At the same time, we’re genuinely sorry that our Original Sound of Music Tour did not live up to your expectations. We particularly appreciate your comments regarding the communication before arriving at each stop. Our guides should provide guests with clear information about what they are about to see, together with the relevant background and filming history, and we understand how this would have affected your overall experience. Regarding access to the filming locations, we completely understand your disappointment. Unfortunately, several iconic locations cannot simply be entered by a tour operator. Some are private property, while others have access restrictions or are functioning institutions. For this reason, certain locations can only be viewed from the coach or from designated viewpoints. This is not a matter of choosing not to arrange admission, but rather of respecting the access regulations that apply to these sites. The tour is designed to combine accessible filming locations with the history of the movie, the real von Trapp family, Salzburg and the Lake District within approximately four hours. We recognize, however, that guests hoping for extensive access to every filming location may prefer exploring certain sites independently and spending considerably more time at each one. We’re sorry that on this occasion the experience gave you the impression that insufficient effort was being made. That is certainly not how we want our guests to feel, particularly on a tour that has been such an important part of our company for many years. Thank you again for your thoughtful and constructive feedback. We’re glad that the Salt Mines Tour was a highlight for you, and we sincerely appreciate you giving us the opportunity to hear where the Sound of Music experience fell short of your expectations.

Salt mine was good. Sound of music tour was not something I would recommend.

I gave this three stars because the salt mine tour was great, but the sound of music tour was not good in my opinion. The salt mine tour was great, very interesting and our tour guide for that tour, Thomas, was wonderful. Thomas was nice, cheerful, very kind and had a great way of being gently humorous while telling us about our trip and keeping us all on track to get to the right places on time. I’d recommend skipping the sound of music tour. It was mostly riding on a bus. We stopped at only a few places ( I think three or four) that were points where the movie had been filmed, and only for a very brief time. Then we rode on the bus to the lakes area near Salzburg, where the scenery was beautiful. We then stopped in a small village to see the church where the wedding was filmed for the movie. I did not think our tour guide, Jose, was very good. He thought he was funny and entertaining, but I found his manner annoying and not funny most of the time. . He seemed to be somewhat jaded about tourists, and seemed very indifferent to the fact that as tourists new to the area, we didn’t know how to get around. At a bathroom stop, he scolded a lady for being a minute or two late back to the bus. Does he not know that there is nearly always a long line at the women’s restrooms and that it is just going to take longer for that reason? When we stopped at the small village to see the church, he took us along a winding route and told us to pay attention to how to get back to the bus. Really? A winding route with many turns, and he expects that we should easily find our own way back to the bus by ourselves in a very short time, in a place where we had never been before. He told us we only had time to visit the church briefly, possibly buy a souvenir at the shop right across the street from the church, and then find our own way back to the bus. Then at the church, he left us. Why didn’t he just tell us that he would wait for us at the souvenir shop or nearby, and then walk with us all together back to the bus?!?!? It would have saved much confusion and hurrying. I would not take a tour with Jose again.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for taking the time to share such detailed feedback about both of your tours with us. First of all, we are very happy to hear that you enjoyed the Salt Mine Tour and that Thomas made such a positive impression on you. Your description of him as kind, cheerful, knowledgeable and gently humorous is wonderful to read, and we will certainly be happy to pass your kind words on to him. At the same time, we are genuinely sorry to hear that your experience on the Original Sound of Music Tour did not meet your expectations. We completely understand that a tour covering several filming locations as well as the beautiful Salzburg Lake District involves a considerable amount of time on the bus. The locations are spread across Salzburg and the surrounding countryside, and the tour is designed to give guests the opportunity to see a variety of important filming locations within the available time. Nevertheless, we understand that you would have preferred longer stops and more time to explore the individual locations. We are particularly sorry to hear about your experience with Jose. Your comments do surprise us, as Jose is one of our most popular guides and consistently receives a great deal of very positive feedback from guests, particularly for his knowledge, humor and entertaining personality. However, we also fully appreciate that humor and communication styles are very personal, and what works wonderfully for many guests may not feel the same for everyone. Your personal experience and impression are important to us, regardless of the many positive reviews he usually receives. We are especially sorry that you felt uncomfortable or rushed during the restroom stop. Keeping a larger group on schedule is an important part of a guide’s responsibility, particularly on a tour with several stops and fixed timings, but this should always be handled with understanding and courtesy. We certainly understand your point regarding restroom queues and that delays of a few minutes can sometimes be unavoidable. We also appreciate your comments regarding the stop in Mondsee and the walk to the wedding church. For guests visiting a place for the first time, finding the way back independently can understandably feel confusing, particularly when time is limited. Your suggestion that the guide could provide an agreed meeting point and accompany the group back to the bus is understandable, and we appreciate you explaining so clearly why this part of the experience was frustrating for you. It is disappointing for us to know that the Sound of Music Tour left you with such a different impression from your Salt Mine Tour. We want our guests to feel welcome, well informed and comfortable throughout their experience, and detailed feedback like yours helps us understand where an individual experience may not have met those expectations. Thank you again for sharing both the positive and negative aspects of your experience so openly. We are very pleased that Thomas and the Salt Mine Tour were highlights of your visit, and we sincerely appreciate your feedback regarding the Sound of Music Tour and Jose. We will take your comments seriously and discuss them internally. We hope that, despite the disappointment with part of your experience, you were able to take home some wonderful memories of Salzburg, the beautiful lake district and the Salt Mines.

Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Salzburg.

How much does Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip cost?

    +

Prices start at $160 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Salzburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip take?

    +

Plan for about 9.3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Salzburg is not rushed.

Is Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 77 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 362 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Salzburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

How far in advance should I book Salzburg Super Saver: Original Sound of Music and Salt Mines Day Trip?

    +

Around 127 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Salzburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Salzburg and add a light layer if any part of the 9.3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Salzburg?

    +

On Outty we rank every Salzburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Austrian Apple Strudel Cooking Class including Lunch in Salzburg, Salzburg Oldtown: Sightseeing Walking Tour with Licensed Local Guide, Salzburg: Palace Concert at the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Salzburg?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Salzburg?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
