What you'll see and do
Salzburg Marionette Theater
In this unique baroque audience hall with 350 seats there have been operas, musicals, plays and fairytales that have occurred here such as: The Magic Flute - Probably Mozart's best known opera, staged here for young and old. In German, subtitled in various languages. Duration: 2 hours 10 minutes, also 1-hour version in afternoons. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre employs 12 puppeteers, trained in a wide variety of trades and professions. Qualities common to all of them are musicality, manual skill, and the ability to emphathise with the various characters in order to bring alive the marionettes on the stage. The Salzburg Marionette Theatre has evolved its own technique, which is used as a model by many marionette theatres worldwide. The puppeteers’ training, which takes place exclusively in the theatre itself, demands just as much time and perseverance as learning to play a musical instrument. Shows are subject to seasonality and won't all be available at one time. Be sure to check back to see what new shows will be playing next.

Great cultural program with small children
I went with my 6-year-old daughter. We love The Magic Flute so she knew the music from before. It was her idea to attend this program. We went at a quiet time to get our tickets. The lady in the box office was extremely kind to us as she showed us the seating arrangement in the room to choose the right seat (we had to leave at the end of the performance to catch a train and sit close to the door). The sound quality was great and the puppets were beautiful, the performers excellent. We both loved the show. My daughter was very happy. This performance is recommended by the theater for kids from the age of 8. We saw other kids under 8 and they all seemed to have enjoyed it.

Definitely worth it!
Better than expected! even if in german we had so much fun, the kids had an incredible experience, us too! It’s not too long so it doesn’t get boring. The puppet masters are fantastic!

Magical!
A magical evening delivered by highly talented group here in Salzburg. Easily able to follow the story despite the german language - some narrative in english was very helpful. Would highly recommend this as a most enjoyable experience. So pleased we went.
Response from the operator: Dear Sharon! Thank you so much for your kind review :-)

Great show but no A/C!
We saw the 1 hour magic flute. Incredible puppetry, a few super titles explaining what was going on in several languages (could have used a few more, but very helpful if you don’t speak German!) but this experience was hard to FULLY enjoy because there didn’t seem to be any air conditioning or air flow. It was a summer day and we were pretty uncomfortable. So I’d recommend this in the cooler months. Went with a 10 year old.
Response from the operator: Thanks for your review, Lindsay. We are very sorry that you felt uncomfortable because of the heat. There is an airconditioning of course but I assume, it was not cool enough that day. We will discuss that with our technician of course. Best regards!

Great performance in Salzburg
We were entranced and delighted by the Performance of Mozart’s Magic Flute. It’s wonderful to see these - actually pretty small — marionettes become transformed on the stage into -almost preternaturally human-like performers. Highly recommended.
Response from the operator: Thank you for attending the show!

Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Salzburg.
How much does Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute cost?
+
Prices start at $49 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Salzburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute take?
+
Plan for about 2 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Salzburg is not rushed.
Is Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 24 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Salzburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 2-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Salzburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Salzburg and add a light layer if any part of the 2-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Salzburg Marionette Theater: The Magic Flute start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Salzburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Salzburg?
+
On Outty we rank every Salzburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Austrian Apple Strudel Cooking Class including Lunch in Salzburg, Salzburg Oldtown: Sightseeing Walking Tour with Licensed Local Guide, Salzburg: Palace Concert at the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Salzburg?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Salzburg?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
