About this experience
This is a walking Tour to visit on the same day two very important archaeological sites: Pompeii and Herculaneum ruins. Both these sites are linked to their tragic destiny due to the 79 AD eruption of Mt Vesuvius, a volcano that still stands majestically close to the two cities This is a walking tour (NO transportation is included) and the transfer between the two archaeological sites will take place by EAV Circumvesuviana railway trains (the trip between Pompeii and Herculaneum takes about 15-20 minutes). Skip the line included in the ruins of Pompeii only. (Entrance tickets and train tickets are NOT included). You’ll meet our professional English-speaking REAL Archaeologist by a pre-arranged meeting point by main entrance of Pompeii site (Porta Marina Superiore). Of course this tour can be customized to your needs and requests and, if you prefer, we can start it from Herculaneum instead of Pompeii. You’ll spend 2 hours in each site (+ transfer time by train from a spot to another)

Archeological Park of Herculaneum
Although Herculaneum is much smaller than Pompeii, it is better preserved. In fact, Herculaneum, unlike Pompeii, was completely buried under 20 meters of mud that preserved incredibly well the most part of the buildings, furnishings, wooden objects, mosaic floors, etc.

Wonderfully informative...
Wonderfully informative with exceptional stories and insights. We loved the ability to visit areas and buildings we were interested in. Dario was an amazing host and educator. If you really want to learn more about Pompeii and Herculaneum he has an incredible depth of knowledge and a passion to share. Even our 2 teenage daughters were captivated, which is hard to do.

First class “Withlocals” experience with Raffaele, passionate historian who actually did excavations at Pompeii!
We booked a private tour thru “with locals” for Raffaele to take us to pompeii and herculaneum. Weeks before the trip one of my grandsons had a question about Pompeii and was very impressed when I just texted our guide to be and got a quick response back. (How does Grandma know people on the other side of the world?) Having done his dissertation research at Pompeii, he knew the site well and navigated us to amazing highlights and views while minimizing blockage by other tour groups. His stories really brought the place to life, and completely engaged our 2 teens. Many people just meet raffaele at the ruins, but I was nervous about transportation, so he might kindly arranged a driver for us. He also arranged for our driver (Giuseppe from Tastethexperience.com) to stop by a particularly shop in naples for a souvenir I wanted. Really thoughtful. Could not have asked for a more interesting tour guide to see a more interesting place.

+

How far in advance should I book Private Pompeii & Herculaneum Guided Tour With An English-Speaking Archaeologist?
+
Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Pompeii can sell out a month out. What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Pompeii and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

+

What are the best things to do in Pompeii?
+
On Outty we rank every Pompeii experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Premium Minivan Trip from Rome: Pompeii Tour & Lunch in Sorrento, Skip the Line Guided Tour of Pompeii Led by an Archaeologist, Explore Pompeii with an Archaeologist. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Pompeii?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Pompeii?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
