I can’t trust Viator for private tours

Our tour was scheduled for 8:00 am. I received a text at 7:55 allegedly from our Mr driver saying that there was an accident somewhere so the traffic was bad and that he or she was running late. After 50 minutes waiting, I texted to ask if they were OK, and I received a phone call from the tour operator. The tour operator first said they did not have our reservation, then he said the original driver thought we we the other booked guest, then he said that it was Viator’s fault for booking 2 tours to start at 8:00 and that they could only handle one at 8:00 and one at 9:30. The operator was apologetic and was clearly scrambling to find a driver for our tour, which finally started around 9:30. The driver was clearly not prepared for this tour, wearing sweats for our tour. He showed up with the taxi light on top of the car and removed it and placed it in the back before our tour. The car was not filthy, but it had not yet been vacuumed and the seats were not yet cleaned. The driver drove like a taxi driver with all the aggression and gestures you’d expect from a taxi driver, and not like a tour host. On the highway, he was speeding to our destinations. It was a stressful ride and not a relaxing tour. The tour operator called me while we were in the car asked for my forgiveness and trust. I expressed that I was upset about the delay and that I had heard the tour was informative, which was not the case with this driver. He tried to make it right by offering extended time for our day or for a free ride to the airport, which we accepted. The tour lacked history or culture references that we expected after reading the reviews. During our stop in St. Wolfgang, the driver had a chance to clean himself up a bit as well as the inside of the car. We were on time getting through the morning having skipped the shoreline stroll at Fushl am See in order to save time for the more premier stops at St. Wolfgang and Hallstatt. At Hallstatt, we went about 30 minutes long in order to get lunch and ro the salt mine tour, and to walk to and from where the driver parked 10 minutes away from the attractions. When we got back to the car in Hallstatt, the driver was in a heated argument on the phone with his boss, and continued in the heated argument on the phone while he was driving. This occurred over several phone calls while leaving Hallstatt. After the heated phone calls, the driver asked if we were still wanting to make the pass through of Gasau. It was clear that he did not want to do this because the day was getting long, and he seamed pleased when we said not to drive through the towns. We wanted to respect his time and therefore we did not hit any of the drive through towns on the way back. During the ride back he was speeding on the highway and seemingly in a bad mood. We tried to ask a couple of questions to lighten the mood, but he was too steamed and only wanted to complain about the situation, so we quit trying and remained quiet within ourselves. The destinations were nice and we made the best of it, but the experience was extremely poor. I’ve had other poor experiences with Viator private tours. I don’t think that Viator

Response from the operator: Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I respect that every guest is entitled to their own opinion, and of course, just as we receive positive reviews, we also accept that there may occasionally be negative ones. However, I would like to clarify a few points. While you were still in Salzburg, I personally informed you that you were welcome to leave a review if you wished, but you chose not to do so at that time and instead decided to post this review after returning home. I also believe it is important to mention that, despite the initial delay, we made an effort to compensate for the inconvenience. We extended your tour by one additional hour, and you also accepted our offer of a complimentary airport transfer. You accepted our apology and the solutions we offered at the time. Therefore, I find it somewhat disappointing that, after accepting our apology and the additional services we provided to make up for the inconvenience, you later chose to present the experience in such a negative way. We fully understand that delays and unexpected situations can happen, and we always do our best to resolve them professionally and fairly. We are not concerned about receiving a negative review—good and bad reviews are both part of running a business. However, I do feel that your review does not fully reflect the efforts we made to resolve the situation and the additional service we provided to you. Nevertheless, I respect your opinion and wish you all the best.

Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Salzburg.

How much does Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains cost?

    +

Prices start at $639 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Salzburg usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains take?

    +

Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Salzburg is not rushed.

Is Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 61 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 11 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Salzburg, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains?

    +

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Salzburg can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Salzburg and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Private Hallstatt Tour from Salzburg - Lakes & Mountains start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Salzburg within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Salzburg?

    +

On Outty we rank every Salzburg experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Austrian Apple Strudel Cooking Class including Lunch in Salzburg, Salzburg Oldtown: Sightseeing Walking Tour with Licensed Local Guide, Salzburg: Palace Concert at the Marble Hall of Mirabell Palace. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Salzburg?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Salzburg?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
