The D. Luís I Bridge (or Ponte Luiz I, in the original spelling inscribed on it), is a metal structure bridge with two decks, built between 1881 and 1886, connecting the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia (north bank and south, respectively) separated by the Douro River, in Portugal. This construction replaced the old suspension bridge that existed in the same location and was carried out according to the project of Belgian engineer Théophile Seyrig, who had previously collaborated with Gustave Eiffel in the construction of the D. Maria Pia Bridge, railway. The bridge was inaugurated in 1886 (upper deck) and 1888 (lower deck and entry into full operation). The D. Mosteiro da Serra do Pilar
The building is on the opposite side of the Douro River from Porto, overlooking the Luís I Bridge and the Historic Center of Porto. The Monastery belonged to the Order of Saint Augustine and its construction began in 1538 and continued over the following centuries, in several stages of construction that significantly altered the initial design. It currently serves as a religious, cultural and military site. The bridge was named in honor of the wife of King D. Luís I, Queen D. Maria Pia de Saboia. The D. Maria Pia Bridge is a railway infrastructure, which carried the Northern Line over the Douro River, between the cities of Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia, in the North of Portugal. It was inaugurated on November 4, 1877 and was closed on June 24, 1991, having been replaced by Ponte de São João.[2] It is considered, along with the Garabit Viaduct, as the greatest masterpieces executed by engineer Gustave Eiffel.At the time of its inauguration, it was the bridge with the largest iron arch in the world.
