Falkland Palace & Garden
Although Falkland Palace, technically, is still the property of the Crown, since it’s acquisition by the 3rd Marquess of Bute in 1887, the property has been in the keepership of the Crichton Stuart family. The village and palace have appeared a few times in the series. I season 1, the village is used to portray post war Inverness in 1946, where Claire & Frank spend their 2nd honeymoon. Whilst looking in to Frank’s ancestral history, they both secretly watch a pagan ritual at the standing stones. Claire returns alone to the stones and falls through time to 1743.

Culross Palace
This is top of the list for many Outlander enthusiasts, and simply must be visited. Highly regarded as one of the finest examples of a Royal Burgh (a Burgh which has been granted a Royal charter from the Crown), from the 17th & 18th century, and a fine jewel in the crown within the Kingdom of Fife. It is one of the most picturesque villages in Scotland, whether you are an Outlander fan or not.

Blackness Castle
Built in the 1400’s on the site of an earlier fort, Blackness was the main port serving Linlithgow, which was one of Scotland’s monarch’s main residence. It has served both as a state prison and a minor garrison. Although thought to be one of the best and most advanced (at the time) artillery fortifications in the land, after a long siege it fell into the hands Cromwell’s New Model Army. In Outlander, it was used to represent Fort William, where Jamie had received lashes from Captain Randall. It’s also where Jamie’s father died, after watching his son being punished. Later in the season 1, Jamie breaks into the castle, rescuing Claire from the hands of Black Jack, jumping into the water below (I don’t think you would catch me doing that anytime soon•).

Doune Castle
Doune (pronounced as in June) is a village on the banks of the River Teith, just outside Stirling. In Scottish dialect, we say “let’s go up te Doune” IE the word “down” in Scotland is often pronounced as “doon”, which sound’s the same as the village name of Doune and the word “te” meaning “to”, so, when said together it gives a positive/negative up/down :-) The castle is very dramatic looking and has been used in a few productions, some of which you may recognise the name of, such as Game of Thrones and Monty Python & The Holygrail to name a couple. Built towards the end of the 1300’s it has an absolutely stunning 100ft high Gatehouse, and also has one of the very best preserved “Great Halls” in the whole of Scotland. The castle plays an integral role in Outlander as the fictional Castle Leoch, home to the Clan MacKenzie. It also features in one of the scenes from the 20th century where Claire & Frank visit the castle ruins (as you would see it now), on a day trip they are on.

Linlithgow Palace
This is the site of what we Outlander enthusiasts would recognise as Wentworth Prison (where Jamie was tortured by Captain Black Jack Randall. Dating back to the 12th century, Linlithgow Palace was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots, as well as some other Scottish monarchs, and was jovially referred to as the “pleasure palace” because of this. The ruins of the palace can be found in the town of Linlithgow, west of Edinburgh, and they are spectacular! Some of the exterior scenes of Wentworth Prison were actually shot at Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland. The castle shape acted as a model for the CGI exterior of Wentworth Prison. In one scene, after a conversation with Mr Fletcher, Claire can be seen being sick. Claire & Murtagh walk out of an entrance gate which is definitely Linlithgow palace, but from a distance shot, it is Bamburgh Castle that can be seen.

Preston Mill & Phantassie Doocot
A “Doocot” is a structure to house pigeons. Broken down, a “doo” is a Scottish name for a Dove/Pigeon. A “cot” is where someone would sleep (as in a child’s cot). In Scottish pronunciation it would be doo (as in boo) and cot (as in kit) so we would say “dookit” The Mill is very picturesque in a wonderful setting and situated near to the Doocot, and guided tours are available for a small fee. In Outlander, filming took place on a couple of occasions in Season 1. In one of the scenes, Jamie has to hide under the water at the Mill as Claire & Jenny are questioned by the Redcoats (soldiers). The Mill’s exhibition room was also used as a room in the court, where the preliminary hearing of Claire and Geillis took place when they were accused of witchcraft.

Loved Outlander Sites
A small group tour (we had 9 in 2 vans) is the way to see these sites. The personal touch Alistar gave us was priceless. On large bus tour much is lost because it might go to all the places you want to see but there is no guarantee. We told Alistar ahead of time exactly what we want to see. He tweeted the tour to meet our requests. It was great. Try that Will a big bus! We were able park very close to our sites because the van was not a huge bus. All I can say is take a private tour. Most Viator private tours can accommodate up to 8 people. Our group had 9 so we had to get 2 vans and 2 drivers.

Not worth the price...
Having a private tour is always more expensive. However, as a solo traveler, I choose to do it because of convenience. I get to see more and get to do pretty much what I choose. This tour, though, was not worth the price paid. I had to pay my own admission everywhere. It was not much, but it is a matter of principal. If I am charged that much, tickets should be included. In addition, not much was explained. I was dropped off to explore on my own. Honestly, next time it will be much cheaper to just hire a car for a day and do what I choose.

Our tours are all carried out in Business Class vehicles and it's important to us that we maintain high standards and our tour prices and explanatory notes do stipulate that entry to any place we visit is not included in the price. There are a few reasons for this but the primary reasons are that each of our tours are private, and we aim to do what our guests want to do on the advertised tour you are on. IE, our guests are not railroaded to suit other people's time-table, and If we pre-purchase tickets (which invariably come with a time-slot), then we must be there at that time. Many of our guests prefer the freedom to choose how long they remain at each place, so they can enjoy more of what they love, and a little less time at the places they've seen enough of. Another reason is that poor weather can result in some guests having to cancel tours or ask to change the itinerary as the weather on that day isn't suitable for what they had in mind. We don't think it's fair that our guests should take a chance on having to pay for tickets (which would be reflected in the tour price) that for one reason or another have to be cancelled due to something they have no control over, such as the weather. Our guides always offer to enter places of significance with our guests. Some places we visit do not welcome guides who are not directly employed at the venue, however our guides can still accompany our guests and share relevant information on the places you visit, on a more discreet one to one fashion. Some of our guests, like yourself, when offered the choice of being accompanied often prefer to use venue provided audio guides and go at their own pace and take more time at particular places of interest, and that is absolutely fine too. Once again, we are sorry that you felt that entry should be included, however would stipulate again that we clearly state that entry, food etc is not included in the price, but we do provide fresh bottles of water/refreshments as part of our service, and hope you understand that booking a tour with Business Class standard vehicles has to be relevantly priced so we can maintain our high standards for all our guests.

Wonderful tour of Glasgow!
Our tour guide, Alistair, was absolutely wonderful! He made the tour very personable, shared tons of stories with us, and truly made Glasgow and the surrounding areas feel like a second home. To top it all off we had beautiful weather which truly made it a dream tour! If you are looking to truly experience and not just see Glasgow, this is the tour for you!

Castles and so much more
Our guide, Alistair, tailored our experience to our interests. We are not Outlander fans so he added some other experiences. We saw Castles, a town where Outlander was filmed, The Kelpies, a beautiful Cathederal and had lunch at a charming place where everything is made in house. It was a great day. Highly recommend booking this tour for a personalized experience! Alistair is the perfect guide to provide you with information about everything you will see!!
