Curral das Freiras was the property of a couple that sold this land to the captain of Funchal, João Gonçalves da Câmara. This captain gave the lands to his daughters when they entered the Santa Clara convent (also built by him).

Pico do Arieiro
is Madeira Island's third highest peak. Most days, visitors can stand and look down on the clouds. The air is fresh and clear and the sun is very bright. On a clear day it is possible to see the neighbouring island of Porto Santo, 30 miles to the northeast.

Valley of the Nuns
In 1566 the nuns from the Santa Clara convent fled from pirates attacking Funchal and found seclusion here, where they also brought the convent treasure. The parish is very isolated, and locals mainly live of what they grow. The local chestnuts are delicious and are used in everyday cooking.

A fab tour , a fab driver but the vehicle wasn’t good
our driver, 10 out of 10 , made us laugh , gave us loads of information about our tour , pleasant , happy , made our day ,went above and beyond, our only bit of disappointment was that we didn’t get a sign written vehicle , instead we had a white Nissan that wasn’t up to scratch, the foams in the seats was not comfy , air con , a very uncomfortable ride

Vehicle from the last century had no air conditioning
The ancient vehicle didn’t have any air conditioning, so it was very hot. The guide didn’t keep his hands on the wheel or eyes on the road. He regaled us with his views on local and international politics, and the twin evils of eucalyptus trees and electric cars. He intended to entertain us, but the operator should realise that clients want to feel safe and comfortable more than anything else. Please upgrade your cars.

Great fun.
A great tour. With hindsight we could have driven to the Nun’s Valley but we were concerned about getting parked and wouldn’t have had the benefit of Eduardo our driver explaining everything and his on-point music playlist. You also miss so much when driving yourself; the passengers get all the views while you concentrate on the road. This was well worth €40 for a half day tour. There’s wasn’t a great deal to actually do in Curral das Freiras except have a coffee and browse a few souvenir shops but gawking at the amazing scenery was more than enough. We did a couple of other minor stops and finished on Pico do Areerio with some incredible views above a partial undercast of cloud. Pick up was punctual although I had to phone the office the evening before to ask when it would be as it wasn’t mentioned on the booking correspondence. This did eventually come through late in the evening though. Also, don’t listen to the AI chatbot on their website. It said this tour was off-road and it absolutely wasn’t, never was! Still, a fun morning out.

The company are reliable and professional. They give a great experience . Our driver was informative and friendly and made the trip fun. We felt safe and everything we did was explained to us. We felt our driver went above and beyond . We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
