About this experience
Mezcal Soul: The spirit of a land This is not just a tasting — it’s an immersive journey into the land, the people, and the science behind one of Mexico’s most iconic spirits. Guided by a local expert and chemist, you’ll explore mezcal from its roots in the agave fields to the final pour in your glass. You’ll taste a curated selection of artisanal mezcals, learning how different agave species, terroir, and traditional production methods shape each flavor. As you sip, you’ll discover the stories behind the producers, the cultural significance of mezcal, and the subtle notes that define quality — from smoky and earthy to floral and fruit-forward. Expect a relaxed yet elevated atmosphere where education meets pleasure. You’ll develop your palate, gain insider knowledge, and experience mezcal in a way that goes far beyond the typical tour. By the end, you won’t just taste mezcal — you’ll understand it, connect with it, and carry a deeper appreciation of Oaxaca’s spirit with you.

Santiago Matatlan
Masterclass and tasting of Mezcal. We will be able to appreciate agave fields and some wild agaves growing in the area, the manufacture of tradicional Mezcal with families from the town. We will be also able to understand the growing of the category and experience the life in a "palenque", which is the name as a distillery is known in Oaxaca. We will observe copper and clay pot distillation and then taste the mezcales obtained from both techniques from a wide variety of agaves. We will be visiting a Pulque farm and how this other beverage from agave is extracted.
180 minutes here
We will spend the rest of the day cooking a traditional grill in the mountains with local ingredients while we enjoy the landscape of a nice Mezcal village in other "palenque" with native mezcalero families. We will be able to do some trekking, wild agave observation in its natural habitat and spent the rest of the day eating and tasting the local traditional food and Mezcal.

Mezcal tasting with Lupita!
This was a phenomenal trip! Lupita tailored it exactly to our tastes. We were a group of eleven and are all very interested in good food and mezcal and Lupita provided exceptionally! From the excellent breakfast at La Cocina de Frida to the artisanal mezcal tasting at Yzacubi (one of the few female mezcal producers in the region), participating in the actual “cooking” of the agave at Agua De La Cuna to a superb lunch at the Michelin mention Almu, it was truly a memorable day. Not only was her knowledge outstanding but we felt like we made a good friend after this tour. Thank you Lupita!

Mezcal Day Experience-a must do!
I think that was the highlight of my trip. There’s nothing like experiencing the intricacies of how mezcal is made. I have a whole new level of awe for the craft and tradition behind mezcal production. Lupita was amazing, I loved every minute of it.

Why this scores 62
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Mezcal Day Experience: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Oaxaca City.
How much does Mezcal Day Experience cost?
+
Prices start at $1800 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Mezcal Day Experience take?
+
Plan for about 7.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Oaxaca City is not rushed.
Is Mezcal Day Experience worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 15 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Mezcal Day Experience?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Mezcal Day Experience suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Mezcal Day Experience?
+
Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 7.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Mezcal Day Experience start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Oaxaca City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?
+
On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include AUTHENTIC OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, Traditional Oaxaqueña Cooking with Grandma's Recipes. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
