    About this experience

Five iconic stops, one unforgettable day. This tour takes you through the heart of Oaxaca's Central Valleys — from the breathtaking petrified waterfalls of Hierve el Agua and the ancient Zapotec mosaics of Mitla, to a working mezcal distillery where you'll taste Mexico's most celebrated spirit straight from the source. Add in a wool rug workshop in Teotitlan del Valle and a 2,000 - year-old tree, and you have the single best day you can spend outside Oaxaca City. Led by a SECTUR-certified bilingual guide, with comfortable transport and hotel pickup included.

    What you'll see and do

    1. Palacio Municipal De Santa Maria Del Tule

Start the day in the quiet town of Santa Maria del Tule, home to the widest tree on Earth. The Tule Tree is a Montezuma cypress over 2,000 years old, with a trunk so massive it requires more than 30 people with outstretched arms to encircle it.

30 minutes here · Admission included

    2. Hierve el Agua

Marvel at one of Mexico's most surreal natural wonders — a series of petrified waterfalls and mineral-rich pools perched 1,500 meters above the Oaxacan valley. Formed over thousands of years by calcium carbonate deposits, these frozen cascades create a landscape unlike anything else in the country. Walk to the edge of the cliffs for panoramic views of the valley below, and take a dip in the natural pools if you wish.

90 minutes here · Admission included

    3. Zona Arqueologica de Mitla

Explore one of the most important Zapotec ceremonial centers in pre-Hispanic Mexico. Unlike the grand pyramids of Monte Albán, Mitla is celebrated for its extraordinary interior architecture — intricate geometric stone mosaics called grecas that cover entire walls without a single drop of death. Still an active religious site for Zapotec communities today, Mitla bridges the ancient world and the living present.

50 minutes here · Admission included

    4. Teotitlan del Valle

Step into a village where the art of weaving has been practiced for over 2,000 years. Watch master weavers (many of them family workshops) transform raw wool into vibrant rugs using natural dyes derived from plants, minerals, and insects — including cochineal, the same red pigment once traded across the ancient world. You'll see the entire process from raw fiber to finished textile and have the opportunity to purchase directly from the artisans.

      60 minutes here

    5. El Rey de Matatlan

Go behind the scenes at a family-run palenque — a traditional mezcal distillery — and discover why this spirit is so much more than just a drink. See how agave plants are harvested, roasted in underground pits, crushed by a stone wheel, fermented, and distilled using methods that have changed little in centuries. Finish with a guided tasting of different mezcal varieties straight from the source.

Very enjoyable, detailed explanations, and a good atmosphere.

Highly recommended for a simple and complete transfer; however, the issue of the tour cost should be reduced since, even though the guide was explicit and made the trip enjoyable, the client had to cover extra costs.

Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Oaxaca City.

How much does Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide cost?

    +

Prices start at $82 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide take?

    +

Plan for about 10 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Oaxaca City is not rushed.

Is Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 12 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable culture & history in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide?

    +

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide?

    +

Around 4 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 10-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Mezcal, Hierve el Agua & Mitla Full-Day Tour with Certified Guide start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Oaxaca City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?

    +

On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include AUTHENTIC OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, Traditional Oaxaqueña Cooking with Grandma's Recipes. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
