Great Mezcal tour
Our mezcal journey with Alfredo was one of the highlights of our time in Oaxaca. The meeting point in downtown Oaxaca was very convenient, and we traveled in a comfortable van with a fun group of just eight people. Our first stop was an agave field about 35 minutes outside the city. Alfredo explained the different varieties of maguey, the mezcals produced from them, and the distinctions between industrial, artisanal, and ancestral mezcal. We also had time to wander through the beautiful fields and take some great photos. From there, we traveled a short distance to the palenque, where we learned about the traditional production process, including fermentation and distillation. The visit was fascinating and very informative. Alfredo then guided us through an extensive tasting, helping us appreciate the differences among the various mezcals. We finished with an absolutely delicious lunch at a nearby restaurant. There were vegetarians in our group, and the restaurant did an excellent job accommodating them. The entire experience lasted about six hours and felt like an exceptionally good value. It was a fun, informative, and very full day. Alfredo was a terrific guide, and we would definitely recommend this tour—and happily do it again ourselves.

An all-time great tour and tour guide
My wife and I have done tours all around the world and this is one of the very best. Alfredo not only gave us an incredible education on the process of making Mezcal - from Agave to glass - but also an education on Oaxaca itself. My wife and I will never forget this one-of-a-kind experience and cannot recommend it more.

Highly recommended!
Absolutely amazing! We had the best time learning about mezcal with Alfredo!

Great Tour! Alfredo is a quality, knowledgeable, and friendly guide!
Excellent tour! For the day, I was the only one and Alfredo provided a wonderful 6 hour full tour. I didn't feel like anything was rushed, and he took his time to answer whatever questions I had. The tour consisted of a visit to the agave fields, the distillery, an unlimited tasting session, then a quality dinner. I would highly recommend this tour for solo or group travellers. There wasn't pressure to buy or tip along the way either.

Highly Recommend this Tour!
This was so fun! We got so much personal attention and so much time at every part of the tour. It never felt rushed and Alfredo was a perfect guide. Warm, friendly, thoughtful, and informative. We were in a group with two others, so our group only had four people. We made friends fast with our other group mates and bonded over mezcal. The tasting portion truly is unlimited. We tried over a dozen different mezcals and had options to get seconds or thirds of whatever we liked best. The meal at the end was delicious and a perfect end to a long day.

Why this scores 91
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
The Mezcal Journey: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Oaxaca City.
How much does The Mezcal Journey cost?
+
Prices start at $109 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Oaxaca City usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does The Mezcal Journey take?
+
Plan for about 6 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Oaxaca City is not rushed.
Is The Mezcal Journey worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 91 out of 100, which we label "90+ Club". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 300 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Oaxaca City, and how flexible the cancellation terms are. Scoring 90 or above puts it in the Outty 90+ Club, the top tier of everything we rank.
Can I cancel or reschedule The Mezcal Journey?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is The Mezcal Journey suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 6-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book The Mezcal Journey?
+
Around 105 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Oaxaca City can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Oaxaca City and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does The Mezcal Journey start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Oaxaca City within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Oaxaca City?
+
On Outty we rank every Oaxaca City experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include AUTHENTIC OAXACA CULTURAL FOOD TOUR, eat like a local., Hierve el Agua 2.5 hours, Mitla, Tule, Rugs and Mezcal for a Day, Traditional Oaxaqueña Cooking with Grandma's Recipes. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Oaxaca City?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Oaxaca City?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
