Woodhenge
Woodhenge is a prehistoric monument that was built during the Late Neolithic period. The monument consists of a series of six concentric rings of wooden posts, consisting of 168 posts in total. The posts are arranged in a symmetrical pattern and were possibly connected by lintels. Woodhenge is thought to have been used as a ceremonial site, and it may have been aligned with the movements of the sun and moon. The site was excavated in the 1920s, and the wood posts were found to have been made from oak trees. 1h 30m drive from London to Woodhenge.

Silbury Hill
Visit the largest man-made tumuli in Prehistoric Europe - Silbury Hill. Silbury Hill is a man-made mound in Wiltshire, England. It is the tallest prehistoric artificial hill in Europe and one of the largest in the world. The hill stands at a height of 37 meters (130 feet) and has a base diameter of 160 meters (520 feet). It is made from chalk and clay and was built using a technique known as terrazzo (or ‘pounded earth’). This technique involved mixing water with dry chalk and clay and then pounding it into place with wooden beams or stone hammers. The resulting mixture was extremely strong and durable and allowed the builders to create a huge mound without the use of modern construction techniques or materials. Avebury is a small village in Wiltshire, England, best known for its extraordinary stone circles. The Avebury Stone Circles are among the largest and most impressive megalithic monuments in the world, and they have been designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The site consists of three stone circles: the outer circle, which is the largest, two smaller circles (northern and southern), and the avenue. The stones are thought to have been erected between 2600 and 2400 BC, and they may have been used for astronomical purposes or for ritual ceremonies. We will explore the stone circles, walk along the avenue, and finish the day with a drink at the Red Lion pub. 1h 45m drive back to London

What an amazing day and experience we had. Tom was our tour guide and archeologist and he was fantastic. Our family was six people, including a 3 year old and 3 senior citizens and everyone had a blast. The van we were picked up in was very luxurious. They were even able to get a car seat for our little one. We were able to go as slow or as fast as we wanted. Tom knew so much and was able to explain everything in a way so everyone could understand. I like to ask deep and specific questions and Tom was great at answering everything.

Enriching Archaeological Experience
Archaeologist Guided Tours’ Dr. Edward Shepherd led our two day tour of the Neolithic landscapes of Avebury and Stonehenge. We based out of Bath and upon meeting Dr. Shepherd on the first morning at the hotel, we knew we were in for a special experience. The first day centered on the Avebury area where we first stopped at the terminal dolmen Devils Den. Dr. Shepherd happily indulged our enthusiasm for archaeology and didn’t insist on a rehearsed presentation. We engaged with him conversationally and were free to propose our own interpretations which Dr. Shepherd either validated or challenged as appropriate. We greatly appreciated this graduate seminar approach to the tour. Following Devils Den, we saw the famous West Kennet Long Barrow, Silbury Hill, and the lesser known Falkners Circle prior to the day’s main attraction the great sarsen avenue and circle at Avebury and a quick look at the nearby Saxon church. Dr. Shepherd paced the tour to our capabilities as my wife and I are in our early 60’s. Nevertheless we walked miles among the ancient monuments. Day two was the headliner featuring Stonehenge. Continuing the narrative of a connected landscape, we began at Durrington Walls. As a veteran of Stonehenge Riverside Project Dr. Shepherd shared with us his personal experience and expertise with this wondrous location. From Durrington, we went to the Cuckoo Stone and then overlooked the Cursus. Then, the preeminent part of the two days began- an approach to Stonehenge via the Avenue. Stonehenge appeared before us as we walked among the grazing sheep following the path of ancestors. What a powerful experience, all while being guided by the true professional Dr. Shepherd. We’ll never forget these great moments. Our tour concluded with a visit to Old Sarum as the tour took us to our next hotel at Salisbury. In summary, Archaeologist Guided Tours and Dr. Shepherd provided the absolute highlight of our two-week stay in England. This experience will last a lifetime and was a tremendous value for the investment. Thanks to Dr. Shepherd and his driver Naz who expertly drove the Mercedes van from monument to monument for providing us with such a special educational opportunity.

Incredible Family Tour of Stonehenge
Ed (Edward) was absolutely fantastic. The entire day tour was incredible and the only way to see Stonehenge and then the lesser visited locations of Salisbury and Avebury. We are a family of 6 with four younger kids, ages 7, 9, 11, and 13. They picked us up right from our AirBNB and we drove out to Stonehenge first. We met our guide, Ed, on the way, and he was perfect for us and our family. He made it entertaining for the kids and his breadth of knowledge on the subjects was astounding! This trip was worth every penny and the logistics part coming from London made it even better; we didn't have to worry about a thing and our driver, Nassir, was great as well. I would recommend this to anyone, just book the private tour, it's worth it. And ask for Ed!

Worth every penny
I have been on scores of tours on seven continents over the past 30 years. This was the best. I spent a long time working over my itinerary to see England. Once I had all the days worked out, I went back and changed my bus tour of Stonehenge to the Archaeologist Guided Tour. It was more expensive, but it was the best choice I made on my tour of England and worth every penny. Our guide was like an uncle who came for a weekend visit to tell us of what he's been up to for his entire career. He didn't talk to us like a lecturing professor. He talked to us like family. He was patient, thorough, kind, and exceptionally capable. He knew everything. I know a lot about Stonehenge. I learned a lot. My family knew very little about Stonehenge. They were enthralled. They know I never write reviews. They demanded that I let everyone know how wonderful this trip was. Thank you to Archaeologist Guided Tours for making our trip so memorable. Here's a plus. They come and pick you up in a comfortable Mercedes van. They bring you back. We didn't just go to Stonehenge. We went to all the nearby places that make Stonehenge understandable and meaningful. A great day. Highly recommended.

The best thing we did in the UK.
This was without a doubt THE best thing we did in the UK. Initially we contacted Dr Ed (our archaeologist) and we then organised a bespoke (no extra cost) neolithic tour of Woodhenge, Stonehenge, Avebury, Silbury hill and the West Kennet Barrow. We were picked up in London in style and then we spent the entire day immersing ourselves in Britain's long distant past. Dr Ed was extremely knowledgeable and spent the day answering all our questions. We highly recommend the Avebury pub for lunch. The entire group had a great time and were returned to our accomodation exactly on time. I know it sounds like a lot of money on the surface, but seeing Stonehenge for the first time after walking past Bronze Age barrows (and not with a million other tourists) was supberb. Highly recommended tour and we would do it again to see Bath, Salisbury and other sights.
