An Abundance of Ocean Life
What a morning on the ocean! Sea turtles, too many to count, and 2 elusive species; Byrde’s whale and a Leatherback turtle. And just for fun, Dolphins, humpback mother and baby, two kinds of stingrays and a yellow bellied sea snake. The guides were knowledgeable, on time, and are passionate about the ocean.
Response from the operator: Thanks for choosing Oceanico to explore the marine wonderland of Huatulco. It's not every trip that we get to see so much of a variety, but it was great to share the experience with fellow marine wildlife enthusiasts! Thanks for leaving us a great review and hopefully we will see you again soon.

It was a truly wonderful and enriching experience from start to finish.
The entire journey was truly magical, made even more special by the incredible expertise of our guide. Their deep knowledge and fascinating, detailed explanations about each species we encountered (from the playful humpback whales to the graceful rays and sea turtles) transformed a simple boat trip into a profound connection with the ocean. It was an absolute privilege to learn so much while witnessing such stunning marine life in its natural hábitat.
Response from the operator: Thanks for joining us to explore the wonderful marine paradise of Huatulco. We appreciate you sharing your experience with fellow travelers and we hope that you can join us again for more adventures in Huatulco.

Mostly a boat ride
2.5 hour whale watching. Actually, maybe 1.5 hour looking for sea animals the last 1+ hours the guide just started having conversations with people… not even looking for anything.
Response from the operator: Thanks for your feedback on our Dolphin & Whale Watching boat tour. For anyone who might read this, on the tour we saw dolphins, sea turtles, leaping manta rays and many species of marine birds. We appreciate the observations of all our guests, but we are a bit unclear what your disappointment is about? We offer boat rides with the opportunity to see marine wildlife hosted by knowledgeable Naturalists and that is what we provided. The guide did her job (well!) which is to give a briefing using laminated species cards at the beginning of the tour, share observations of the species observed during the tour, take photos for our research projects and otherwise host our guests in conversation. Meanwhile the Captain's job is to navigate the boat and search for marine species to observe. He found dolphins, sea turtles, oceanic rays and sea birds. During the first 90 minutes there were many sightings and during the last 60 minutes less. The Captain continued to navigate the boat through the Huatulco National Park while searching for more species to observe. True that during the last 60 minutes we did not find any marine wildlife to observe, but these are wild animals and we do not control them - nor would we want to. We consider every sighting a wonderful blessing and we are grateful to be able to share these experiences in the wild ocean. So that is what happened. Not sure why that was so poor in your opinion - perhaps you expected too much on a 2.5 hour boat ride to see marine wildlife?

Too Seasick To Enjoy
The seas were very choppy and there were so many participants, two boats were needed. Ours was the more crowded boat, so moving around was limited. I was one of a few of the participants who got seasick. Despite seeing two leatherback turtles, many small rays, and a humpback whale, I did not enjoy the excursion for obvious reasons. 🤢
Response from the operator: Thanks for choosing our little organization and we are glad that you got to see the whales, rays and sea turtles. We always operate two boats and never fill them to capacity. It was much more choppy on that morning than the marine forecast predicted, but we still did our best to show everyone the wonderful marine species in Huatulco - we think turtles, mantas and whales is pretty good! We understand how disappointing it was for you to get motion sickness and we wish that there was some miracle cure. For anyone concerned about motion sickness we recommend; avoiding too many adult beverages the night before a tour, avoiding heavy or greasy food before a tour and if you are susceptible to motion sickness taking a medication you know works for you at least one hour before the trip. Happy and safe travels. All the best from Oceanico.

Why this scores 67
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Huatulco.
How much does Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching cost?
+
Prices start at $800 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Huatulco usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching take?
+
Plan for about 2.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Huatulco is not rushed.
Is Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.7/5 across 41 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Huatulco, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 3. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 2.5-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching?
+
Around 14 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Huatulco can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Huatulco and add a light layer if any part of the 2.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Huatulco Dolphin & Whale Watching start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Huatulco within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Huatulco?
+
On Outty we rank every Huatulco experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tour to Copalitilla Magical Waterfalls from Huatulco with admission included, Huatulco Ocean Eco Adventures, Huatulco: Waterfalls, Zipline & Oaxacan Food. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Huatulco?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Huatulco?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
