Excellent tour of San Miguel waterfalls

We did an excellent tour of the San Miguel waterfalls with our guide Archie. This was a full day adventure! Pick up at the hotel was much appreciated! We drove for 1.5 hours in to the jungle. (Note: windy roads. If you get motion sickness like me, I recommend taking a Dramamine). We stored at a market where we learned about local products like anti headache spray using Mezcal and herbs. Very interesting! Then we pushed on another 30 minutes - this time over an un paved road. This was very crazy bumpy! Thank goodness for our good driver! Can’t believe the truck made it! Because of the quality of this part of the road, I think it is 100% worth it to payfor a tour to go visit the waterfalls. I can’t imagine trying to navigate with a rental car. Once we arrived at the waterfalls, there was a chance to change into swimsuits, but I would just recommend wearing your swimsuit right from the start. Note that there is no sunscreen allowed. You are mostly in shade the whole time you are walking and even swimming in the waterfall so it didn’t feel like it was very necessary. It was recommended to bring natural bug repellent, but in the end we didn’t end up using any. We really didn’t notice many bugs at visiting in July despite being in the jungle. But if you do want to bring some, please make sure that it’s natural because you don’t want chemical chemicals being introduced into that natural space. We spent about 30 minutes hiking through the jungle moving from one small waterfall all the way along to the final big one called San Miguel. I guess there were about six that we visited and we swam in four. It was really beautiful and not overly crowded. Personally, I would’ve rather not take the time to swim in those other smaller falls and spent much more time at the last one. By thetime we got to the big one, I was kind of ready to be done so didn’t enjoy it as much as if it was the only place we swam or one of just two places. The last spot was quite cool with a rope swing and a little cave that you could enter in under the waterfall and really beautiful pools. Our whole time in Oaxaca we had been so hot and not able to really ever get cool at our hotel and this tour was such a welcome adventure! It was not too hot or humid in the jungle, surprisingly, and the freshwater was so cold and perfectly delicious and enjoyable! After the swimming, we headed out for lunch. But it was probably around 330 by the time we got to lunch. I would highly recommend that you bring snacks and have a hearty breakfast before you set out knowing that you’re gonna be eating quite late. The place we had food was absolutely fantastic! Felt extremely authentic and the food was super delicious, including barbacoa chicken and mole and absolutely delicious pork. Some of the best food we had the whole trip. There was also a little market at the very end where we could buy somethings including chocolate, which was nice to be able to support some locals. Our guide was very personable and knowledgable and gave us lots of good information about the area without being overwhelming. He also translated everything into both Spanish and English because everyone on the tour was Spanish-speaking except for my family of three who pretty much only speak English. Back along the bumpy road and we were back at the hotel by 5 PM. We originally booked us tour thinking it would be a 7 to 8 hour adventure, but it was more like nine hours. Overall, I would highly recommend this tour! The most important recommendation I have is that you book this tour directly with the operator! This supports the local economy. It makes sure that the money goes directly into the pockets of the locals. Unfortunately, I booked this through Get Your Guide, which I really regret. The third-party operator misrepresented the tour saying that we would be visiting Cascades Magicales - which we didn’t, and said we’d be doing tortilla making and the tour would be 7-8 hours. None of which was accurate. Booking through a third-party means that you can’t be sure what you are going to get and means that they can misrepresent what they are sellingyou. In the end, they are connecting you with a local tour company, and that local company will provide you with their own tour. Much better to book directly with them so that you know exactly what you’re getting and supporting local rather than some third-party.

Response from the operator: Dear Michel, Thank you for taking the time to share such a thoughtful and detailed review. We’re delighted you enjoyed the San Miguel Waterfalls, the authentic Oaxacan food, and Archie’s bilingual guidance throughout the day. Your practical tips will surely help future travelers. We also appreciate your feedback regarding the itinerary description and duration shown by third-party platforms. As the local tour operator, we strive to provide accurate information and will continue working with our partners to keep all listings updated. It was a pleasure sharing this adventure with you and your family. We hope to welcome you back to Huatulco for another unforgettable experience! The Paraiso Huatulco Team

How long does Huatulco: Waterfalls & Oaxacan Food take?

Is Huatulco: Waterfalls & Oaxacan Food worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 88 out of 100, which we label "Exceptional". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 93 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable most highly reviewed in Huatulco, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Huatulco: Waterfalls & Oaxacan Food?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

How far in advance should I book Huatulco: Waterfalls & Oaxacan Food?

    +

Around 33 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Huatulco can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Huatulco and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Huatulco?

    +

On Outty we rank every Huatulco experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Tour to Copalitilla Magical Waterfalls from Huatulco with admission included, Huatulco Ocean Eco Adventures, Cascadas: Puente Colgante + Zona de Clavados. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Huatulco?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Huatulco?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
