    A desert in the sky

This is a must if you’re visiting Maui. Hike Maui provided an excellent service and our guide P.T. was super knowledgeable and couldn’t be more accommodating to the group. The tour takes you up 10,000 feet where you will take a hike about a mile into a shield volcano and back out. There were two parts because the landscape is vastly different. It gets a little cool at the summit depending on the season you may need a few more layers. Hike Maui provides jackets and backpacks if needed and plenty of snacks our guide immediately had us snacking and hydrating the moment we started our van ride up the summit. He was well stocked with a variety of snack chips granola bars beef jerky fruit and nuts also water and you get a sandwich for lunch. P.T. will find a good spot with excellent views to have a lunch break at. There are plenty of opportunities to use restrooms, this is a national park and you stop at two visitor centers along the way. There you can fill water bottles use the bathroom and purchase souvenirs. The hike isn’t very challenging but it’s a spectacular experience. I was very impressed with Hike Maui and our guide P.T. Don’t second guess yourself book this hike.

Response from the operator: Mahalo for the fantastic recommendation! We’re so glad P.T. made your Haleakalā adventure comfortable, engaging, and well cared for from start to finish. The summit scenery is truly one of Maui’s most unforgettable experiences, and we appreciate you choosing Hike Maui!

    Hike Maui are the best!

I did the Haleakala Crater hike, which was simply stunning! The landscapes and the overall experience was just incredible. Our guide Momo was so cool - lovely person, extremely knowledgeable and very capable. I also did the waterfalls hike with PT, and that was so enjoyable as well. If you love hiking and enjoy getting out in nature, you'll be in good hands with Hike Maui!

Response from the operator: Thank you for the wonderful review! We’re so glad both Momo and PT helped make your Hike Maui adventures so memorable, from the dramatic beauty of Haleakala Crater to the lush waterfall trails. It’s always a joy to share Maui’s incredible variety of landscapes with fellow nature lovers. We truly appreciate you exploring with Hike Maui!

    Great way to experience Haleakala

Great way to experience Haleakala Crater - loved the two hikes we did with very different landscapes. One was more lush and the other felt like we were on Mars! Marko was very kind and prepared. I appreciated the attention the overall itinerary and making sure that each of us would have a comfortable experience with water, snacks, lunch, and jackets.

Response from the operator: Mahalo for the kind words! We're so glad you enjoyed exploring the stunning contrasts of Haleakalā—it's truly amazing how much the landscape can change in one day. Marko will appreciate your recognition; he’s all about creating a thoughtful, well-paced experience for every guest. We’d love to have you join us again for more island adventures!

    Breathtaking hike!

This hike was breathtaking. I went with my husband and 8 year old boy who loves hiking. The trails were not too hard, though all uphill on the way back for both hikes. Our guide was very knowledgeable, we all learned so much during our hike. Highly recommend for anyone who loves exploring nature on foot!

Response from the operator: I’m glad your family enjoyed the hike and that your son’s love for the outdoors got to shine here in Maui. It’s always rewarding to see guests learn something new while exploring the island’s beauty. Mahalo for the recommendation, and here’s to many more adventures on foot. Keep on hikin’!

Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Maui.

How much does Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience cost?

    +

Prices start at $208 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Maui usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience take?

    +

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Maui is not rushed.

Is Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 74 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.8/5 across 74 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Maui, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience?

    +

Around 26 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Maui can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Maui and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Haleakala Crater Hiking Experience start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Maui within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Maui?

    +

Maui's three signature days are the Hana road, the Haleakala summit sunrise and the Molokini snorkel sail, and all three are logistics problems as much as experiences. Sunrise summit entry is permit-controlled, Hana is a ten-hour driving day, and Molokini boats vary wildly in size. Our ranking rewards operators who handle permits and keep boat capacity low. On Outty we rank every Maui experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Molokini Crater + South Maui Coast Adventure from Kihei, Maui, Maui: VIP Private Road to Hana Tour with Pick Up, Road to Hana Adventure Maui Tour with Lunch. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Maui?

    +

April to May and September to October. Whale season runs December to April. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Maui?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
