About this experience

In the midst of the commotion and cacophony of Kathmandu lie two places that feature the great dichotomy of Nepal: The Garden of Dreams and the famous Thamel Shopping District. With your personal guide, navigate the narrow streets and shops to find the finest of bargains, and then relaxing in the quietness of the Garden of Dreams. Thamel is the mecca of shopping adventure. Its narrow streets are filled with people, rickshaws and activity. Musicians provide live entertainment as you walk from shop to shop. The narrow alleyways are filled with delightful shops that feature amazing jewelry, pashmina, rare books and food from around the world. Then there is the Garden of Dreams. A beautiful, English garden with reflecting ponds, statues and hidden alcoves that is alive with colorful flowers. It was designed almost 100 years ago by one of the Ranas whose family ruled Nepal for just over 104 years.

What you'll see and do

  1. Garden of Dreams

No trip to Kathmandu is complete without diving into Thamel, the city's vibrant, colorful, and wonderfully chaotic heart! This is a "must-see" cultural hub and a shopper's paradise. Our expert guide will lead you through its famous maze of spider-web alleys, helping you discover hidden gems you'd never find alone. Unearth treasures, from handcrafted jewelry and rare books to authentic Pashmina and yak wool. But Thamel is more than shopping; it's a cultural explosion. We'll pass hidden Hindu and Buddhist temples where craftsmen and devotees share the same narrow lanes. Then, when you're ready to escape, your guide will reveal the ultimate secret: Garden of Dreams. Step through a gate and leave the "cacophony" behind, entering a stunningly beautiful and peaceful neoclassical garden. This is your private oasis. Relax on the lush green lawns, find a quiet nook, and soak in the tranquility. This "must-do" tour shows you both sides of Kathmandu: the thrilling energy and the serene calm.

  2. Asan

This is not just a market; it's a "must-see" sensory explosion and the historic, beating heart of old Kathmandu. Asan, located at the ancient crossroads of old caravan routes, is the city's most vibrant and wonderfully chaotic traditional bazaar. Your guide will lead you through this famous "six-street" intersection, where authentic Newari culture unfolds in a dazzling display. This is where real locals have shopped for centuries. Prepare to be amazed by the sights, sounds, and smells: pyramids of colorful spices, mountains of rice and lentils, glistening copperware, and bright marigold garlands. Asan is also a major cultural and religious hub, with its own festival calendar and the hidden, central Annapurna Temple (Temple of the Goddess of Grains). This is a "must-do" for photographers and anyone wanting to experience the real, unfiltered energy of Kathmandu's oldest marketplace.

A quiet place in the midst of the city

If you want a quiet space to relax, read a book, and enjoy a garden in the middle of Kathmandu, then this is your trip. Our guide Rabina met us promptly at our hotel, guided us through the hectic (and I'm from NYC) traffic of Kathmandu to arrive in this serene place. She is a local young lady from Kathmandu who provided us with a nice afternoon at the garden plus a bit of shopping in Thamel.

Response from the operator: Hello Nancy, Thank you for choosing Himalayan Planet Adventures for your short tour & sharing your experience on Trip Advisor. We are always willing to serve you with our better service and professional staffs.

Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kathmandu.

How much does Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping cost?

+

Prices start at $30 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kathmandu usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping take?

+

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kathmandu is not rushed.

Is Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 59 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kathmandu, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 3. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kathmandu can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kathmandu and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Garden of Dreams Tour and Thamel Shopping start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kathmandu within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Kathmandu?

+

On Outty we rank every Kathmandu experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Private Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour | UNESCO World Heritage sites, Classic Everest Base Camp Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Kathmandu?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Kathmandu?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
