About this experience
National Museum is the first public museum of Nepal which was not opened till 1938 to general public. It was an arsenal museum and repository of weapons as well as a private collection of Royal family and Rana Prime Ministers. It was accessible to the general public in 1938 AD and was named as “Chhauni Silkhana“.It was renamed as Nepal Museum in 1942. It was formally named as National Museum (Rastriya Sangrahalaya) in 1967. Ever since its inception, the museum has collected thousands of pre-historical, archeological , history and culturally important objects and thus occupies as very prominent position as a repository of ancient Nepalese art, culture, sculpture and painting. Opposite the National Museum in an army compound, this will likely appeal only to fans of military history. Lined up on parade outside the museum are a two-person tank, Nepal’s first ever Rolls-Royce, gifted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1961, and a Sky van transport plane.

Group visit
We went as a study group and found some off the exhibitions very well presented even in an older setting. There was much to see.,only confusion was that the museum was in two separate locations on opposite side of the road.
Response from the operator: Dear John, Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback regarding your experience with our “Explore National Museum and Military Museum with Professional Guide” trip. We're thrilled to hear that your study group enjoyed the exhibitions and found them to be well presented, even in their historic settings. We strive to curate engaging experiences that inform and inspire our visitors. We appreciate your observation about the museum's layout. It can indeed be a bit confusing that the exhibitions are housed in two separate locations across the street from each other. We are continuously working to improve our signage and communication to help our guests navigate better. Your input is valuable in helping us enhance our visitor experience. If there's anything else you would like to share or if you have suggestions for improvement, please feel free to reach out to us. Why this scores 62
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Kathmandu.
How much does Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide cost?
+
Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Kathmandu usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide take?
+
Plan for about 4 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Kathmandu is not rushed.
Is Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4/5 across 1 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Kathmandu, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide suitable for kids and families?
+
The operator sets a minimum age of 5. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 4-hour running time when deciding.
How far in advance should I book Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide?
+
Around 0 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Kathmandu can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Kathmandu and add a light layer if any part of the 4-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Explore National Museum and Military Museum with professional guide start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Kathmandu within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Kathmandu?
+
On Outty we rank every Kathmandu experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Private Kathmandu Sightseeing Tour | UNESCO World Heritage sites, Classic Everest Base Camp Trek, Manaslu Circuit Trek. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Kathmandu?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Kathmandu?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
