About this experience
This private tour takes you through the nooks and crannies and grand streets of perhaps the greatest city in the world. Greater London might be 671 Square Miles but comparatively few people visit the City of London which is just 1 square mile. This is the original London. The London of the Romans and those who lived before them. The Vikings, Anglo-Saxons and Normans. Money, finance, big business and science mixed with Great Fires, Plagues. poverty, crime, executions and the Blitz. In this walk we will see almost all of it. The modern skyscrapers, the Roman ruins and everything in between. Leave the Big Bus tours behind; many of the places we go, don't even have roads. This is the real, authentic London with medieval lanes not the busy tourist sites in Westminster. We guarantee you won't have seen this side of London because that's what even Londoners have told us.

We could not recommend Stephen and Ye Olde England Tours more highly.
We did our homework before booking a tour in London. With so many options available, we were looking for something more than a checklist experience — we wanted depth, context, and someone with a truly extensive knowledge of history. That’s exactly what we found with Ye Olde England Tours and Stephen Liddell. From the start, it was clear that Stephen is exceptionally well-read and deeply knowledgeable — not just about the well-known historical milestones, but about the lesser-known stories that bring London to life. He has an incredible ability to connect the dots between centuries of history in a way that feels natural, engaging, and memorable. Over the course of the day, we toured five major London icons, but what made the experience extraordinary were the moments in between — walking through hidden alleys, pausing at unassuming street corners, and hearing stories about events that happened right where we were standing. These are the details you would never discover on your own and that elevate the entire experience from a tour to something truly immersive. Stephen is tremendously funny, thoughtful, and engaging. He reads the room beautifully, adjusts to your interests, and keeps the energy lively without ever losing the substance. The day flew by, and we walked away feeling like we had not only seen London but understood it. We could not recommend Stephen and Ye Olde England Tours more highly. If you want a London experience that is intelligent, personal, and unforgettable, this is it.

Amazing deep dive into 2000 years of history
This was an one-of-a-kind experience. Stephen showed me through hidden gardens and courtyards that I would never have been able to find on my own. He gave an amazing overview of 2000 years of history including famous people, literary references, and ordinary life through the ages. Highly recommended.
Response from the operator: Hi there! Thanks for your great review. I hope you're keeping well. I'm so glad that you enjoyed the tour as I did myself. I'm fortunate to have so many appreciative visitors like yourself.

Great tour and awesome guide
Stephen Liddell is an amazing tour guide. We covered a ton of ground in England and learned all about the history along the way. We look forward to coming back and doing another one of his tours.
Response from the operator: Thank-you so much, that's very kind of you to say so and I really appreciate your review. See you again one day!

Hidden Treasure on this Amazing Tour of the City of London
This was one of the best walking tours we've ever taken! Roman walls, secret gardens, bombing sites reclaimed by nature, wonderful new buildings framed by the ancients, private odes to unsung heroes, London haunts of those who left to become American icons...these are just the few of the treasures of this magnificent, private and serene walking tour that Stephen Liddell offers in the City of London. Strongly recommended.
Response from the operator: Thank-you for your wonderful and very kind review. I'm so glad that you enjoyed your tour with me. Yes it is such a serene and sometimes surreal tour to be in the centre of one of the greatest cities of all time and yet often have it all to ourselves. I really enjoy showing people the original and oldest part of London. Thank-you again!

Best Thing in London!
Book this tour! Or any tour from this company! Stephen is one of the kindest, most genuine, and knowledgeable person you will ever meet. If you are looking for tour to see more of a London than just the big touristy highlights, this tour is for you. See things like alley ways where gravestones were built into the building! The oldest church in London and its Roman ruins crypt! Lovely gardens! And so much more. I guarantee this will be the highlight of your time in London.
Response from the operator: Aww, thank-you, that's such a nice thing to say. I'm so glad you enjoyed our day. I really like going round all these places in the old City of London and apart from us, totally free of tourists! Thanks for this fabulous review.

Why this scores 60
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
City of London Walking Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for London.
How much does City of London Walking Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $95 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in London usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does City of London Walking Tour take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in London is not rushed.
Is City of London Walking Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 60 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 6 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in London, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule City of London Walking Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is City of London Walking Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book City of London Walking Tour?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in London can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in London and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does City of London Walking Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central London within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in London?
+
London's best attractions split cleanly: the museums are free and need no booking, so the paid market is about views, theatre and getting out of the city for a day. That makes value scoring unusually important here, and the Outty Ranking penalises anything charging premium prices for access you could get for nothing. On Outty we rank every London experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Soho Music & Historic Pubs Tour, London Small Group Tour of Historical Pubs, The Great British Rock and Roll Walking Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit London?
+
May to September for long evenings, December for the Christmas markets. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in London?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
