First visiting New Zealand in the 1970s for an exhibition of his work, he decided to make the country his second home and bought property on the Waikare inlet, east of Kawakawa. In 1998 with the help of the community he transformed the town’s public toilets into a work of art.

Nature’s Beauty
Very long day but well worth it! Seas were a little choppy on the boat, so if you are prone to sea sickness or aren’t sure take motion sickness meds before or use a patch. Our driver guide Karthik was amazing and knows so much about the country and history! I highly recommend this tour!!!!!
Response from the operator: Kia Ora Michele, Thank you for your fantastic 5-star review! The Bay of Islands is always an adventure, and we’re so glad it was a day worth every moment for you. Great tip as well for future travellers heading out on the water. Karthik will be delighted to hear your kind words. He loves bringing the journey to life with stories and insights that make the day even more memorable. We truly appreciate your recommendation and would love to welcome you back for another unforgettable experience in Aotearoa. Ngā mihi nui, The ExperienceKart Team

Support a Family Business - Great way to see the Bay of Island
What a day ! Even though it was long, it is well worth it. If you read the description of the tour, it is what you get (except we didn't see whales !! but that's ok). The communication of change of pick up address was not a problem. Karthik was a great tour guide on our drive up to the Bay of Islands, his knowledge of Auckland and surrounding area was exceptional and his interest in the science was really interesting and was always checking that we were ok. The transport car (van) was very comfortable - enough so, I may of dozed off !!! Karthik made sure we got on our 3hr + boat cruise/tour and seeing the dolphin's at play was definitely a highlight. All in all a great day and this is a family run business and good to support the little guys instead of the big commercial companies. Highly recommend if you have limited time in Auckland and want to see the Bay of Islands.
Response from the operator: Kia Ora KJN2010, Thank you for your thoughtful and detailed 5-star review. We’re delighted to hear you had such a wonderful day exploring the Bay of Islands and that the experience lived up to the tour description. It’s great to know you enjoyed the scenic journey, the cruise, and especially the highlight of seeing dolphins in the bay. Karthik will be very pleased to hear your kind words. He truly enjoys sharing his knowledge of New Zealand’s landscapes, science, and history while making sure guests feel comfortable throughout the journey. We’re also glad the vehicle provided a relaxing ride for the long but beautiful drive north. As a small family-run business, your support and recommendation truly mean a lot to us. Thank you for choosing to travel with us, and we hope to welcome you back for another adventure in Aotearoa. Ngā mihi nui, The ExperienceKart Team

Why this scores 73
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland cost?
+
Prices start at $287 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland take?
+
Plan for about 13 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 73 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 22 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 13-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland?
+
Around 8 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 13-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Bay of Islands Explorer Experience Small Group Tour From Auckland start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
