Very long but beautiful day
All day Bay of Islands tour: This is an incredible tour, but be aware of what you’re signing up for - this is a very long day on a mini bus! That being said, our tour guide Simon was absolutely incredible during the drive up and back. He was so knowledgeable on the countryside and the history of the area, and of New Zealand itself, with just the right amount of humor. He’s the main reason this tour gets five stars. The Bay of Islands, of course, was as beautiful as advertised. I recommend this for anyone who wants to get up and see that area in one day and is willing to endure over 12 hours to do so.

Hole in the Rock
Long but very enjoyable day. Some light showers and wind made for bit bumpy ride on the ferry but there is an enclosed deck for fair weather travelers. Jon our driver was superb. Excellent service dropping all in our group back to our hotels in the evening. Good taste of Bay of the islands wanting a longer stay but great for a day trip!

A perfect day getting to know more of beautiful New Zealand
At first I was worried that this trip would be too long. However, the long drive to and from Auckland is a beautiful drive. The driver, Nancy, made it a fascinating experience, telling us about history, the people of New Zealand, as well as cultural information of the Māori and current events. She made stops in interesting places and anticipated our every need. The trip on the bay was fabulous! It is beautiful! A pod of dolphins put in an incredible display of acrobatics for more than 30 minutes. It seemed they knew they had an appreciative audience. From our great driver, Nancy, who was friendly, helpful and very knowledgeable, to the exquisite natural beauty of the bay, everything was perfect. I enjoy every minute.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for this beautiful review. We’re delighted to hear that your private Bay of Islands experience exceeded expectations. The long drive is indeed a scenic journey, and we’re thrilled that Nancy’s knowledge, stories, and thoughtful care helped make it both comfortable and fascinating. Your description of the dolphin encounter is wonderful — what an unforgettable moment! It’s great to know that every part of the day, from the commentary to the stops to the stunning natural beauty, felt perfect for you. We truly appreciate your kind words and are so pleased you enjoyed every minute. We would love to welcome you back for another memorable adventure in Aotearoa.

Why this scores 72
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Bay of Islands Private Tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Bay of Islands Private Tour cost?
+
Prices start at $50 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Bay of Islands Private Tour take?
+
Plan for about 12 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Bay of Islands Private Tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 72 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.9/5 across 18 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Bay of Islands Private Tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Bay of Islands Private Tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 12-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Bay of Islands Private Tour?
+
Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 12-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Bay of Islands Private Tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
