About this experience

Unique aspects of a Khmer cooking class often include learning in an intimate, small-group setting, often inside a local's home, with a hands-on experience that starts with a market tour to select fresh ingredients. Key unique elements Authentic setting: Many classes offer a personal and intimate experience by being held in a local family's home, rather than a large restaurant kitchen. Hands-on market tour: You'll go to a local market with your instructor to learn about and select the fresh ingredients for your meal, providing a complete cultural experience from start to finish. Personalized instruction: The small class sizes, often limited to six people, allow for personalized, hands-on support and advice from the instructor. Cultural immersion: The experience provides insight into Khmer culture through its cuisine, with an emphasis on aromatic spices, herbs, and other traditional ingredients.

What you'll see and do

  1. Wat Thmey (Killing Fields)

KILLING FIELDS – WAT THMEY, known as Siem Reap’s Killing Field, is one of many killing fields in Cambodia during the tragic Khmer Rouge/Pol Pot regime from 1975–1979. The Khmer Rouge forced city dwellers to flee to the countryside to perform manual labour in the fields and was responsible for mass killings trying to establish a classless society. The effects of this bloody time are still being overcome by those that were lucky enough to survive. WAT THMEY in 1995 was renovated, a substantial amount of bones and skulls of the victims were placed in the memorial stupa. This place is the most convenient to visit if you don’t have time to visit Phnom Penh’s killing fields and S21 prison, the largest memorial for the brave population that perished.

  2. Psar Chaa - Old Market

IIt is the largest local market selling everything that you would find in your hometown Shopping Mall, only with a Khmer feel. Fruit, vegetables, flowers, Khmer sweet treats and cakes greet you as you arrive. Gold jewellery and other gem stalls stretch down the centre of the building, making a good landmark if you get lost. If you want a typical Khmer outfit to attend a wedding, you can have it made here. Outside at the rear you will find a large variety of fresh fish, seafood, all meat products. Not a lot of English is spoken but it’s safe to wander, practice your Khmer, and take in the abundance and variety of stock. Good idea to take small notes as no credit card facilities. It’s not air conditioned but hot, noisy and vibrant and shouldn’t be missed.

  3. Angkor National Museum

NATIONAL MUSEUM is along the way to Angkor Wat. This museum has a large artefact collection and tells history stories of the periods before the Khmer Empire, during the Khmer Empire and after as well. A visit here will give you a deeper knowledge of Cambodia and it’s long and proud history, more ancient than its other neighbouring countries. Many well-preserved statues have been selected from different sites around Cambodia and brought to this museum. On a TV screen there is a short, English speaking movie (with sub-titles) about the Khmer Empire. Visiting the Museum will definitely help you understand and appreciate what you see and learn during your Temple tours.

  4. Wat Preah Prom Rath

WAT PROMH RATH is centrally located in the city, just north of the Old Market and Pub Street. Here we can see the story of Budda painted on the walls in the Buddha Hall which your guide can explain to you. The reclining Buddha can be seen behind part of the Hall. It is possible to have a blessing from the monks and later talk and learn the Buddhist rules and other practices, before taking a few minutes for meditation. Outside the Hall are beautiful, manicured tropical gardens with statues and other highly decorated buildings. You may be lucky enough to see a special ceremony taking place.

  5. Don’t miss this wonderful opportunity to learn authentic Khmer cooking with our friendly chef! During the class, you’ll learn how to prepare traditional Cambodian dishes using fresh local ingredients. Before cooking, visit a local market with our home-style chef, where you’ll discover how local people buy and sell fresh produce in a traditional Cambodian atmosphere. Our guide will be happy to show you around and answer any questions. Come and enjoy a fun, authentic Khmer cooking experience—and give it your best !

Fascinating and informative. The tour blends history, culture, cuisine and character brilliantly.

This tour was amazing. Travelling around with Kosorl was brilliant. His knowledge is endless and he has a real connection with many of the fascinating places we visited. The cooking class was really good too. This is one of the best tours in town.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much brother for visiting here with us and we are very excited to hear from you as your amazing experiences . We are looking forward to see you again in next time. Best Regard

Knowledge, passion and delicious food

Mr.K our guide was knowledgeable and friendly. Our conversations ranged from food to history and politics to his family and life. Made the entire day great fun. The cooking school was brilliant, our chef was a good guide and we even enjoyed eating what we cooked! All down to her guidance rather than any ability we had.

Response from the operator: We're delighted you enjoyed your day with Mr. K and our cooking school! We all appreciate you sharing your experiences and it's great to know you enjoyed the food you cooked.

Fun hands-on learning experience

The guide Kosorl was friendly and engaging with students. He was attentive to our needs and prompt in his services. The cooking class was a great hands-on experience for our students. We are grateful for the opportunities to engage with the locals and cook fish amok. Thanks Kosorl!

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for your holiday here with us and we hope to see you later. Wonderful thanks

Sok San Homestay

To share in the every day living of a typical Khmer family is a unique experience. It might not be for everyone- no ensuite with hot and cold running water or flushing toilet, but there are bathroom facilities available. This is how much of the Cambodian population live. Your hosts are kind, friendly people who will welcome you to their world. The many children you will meet love having visitors. Bring your sense of humour, your best stories and songs for the kids. The food is plentiful and authentic. Don't feel offended if your hosts don't eat with you. That's normal in Cambodia - you are their special guests. Kosorl will ensure you are involved in the daily activities of the community as well as showing you the many wonders of Cambodia. If you're up for an adventure, this could be life changing. Certainly it will help change the people you meet and interact with. Why not give it a go? I did and will continue to do so.

Response from the operator: Thank you for always keep coming back to Siem Reap. I miss you. Best Regard from Mr K

1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Siem Reap.

How much does 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class cost?

+

Prices start at $15 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Siem Reap usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class take?

+

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Siem Reap is not rushed.

Is 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 4 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Siem Reap, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 6. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 3-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class?

+

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Siem Reap can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Siem Reap and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does 1 Day Private Siem Reap City Tour & Khmer Cooking Class start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Siem Reap within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Siem Reap?

+

On Outty we rank every Siem Reap experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Angkor Wat Sunrise or Sunset Small-Group and Guide tours, Angkor Wat full Day 'Small Group with sunset & Tour Guide, Angkor Wat Sunrise or Sunset Tour with Guide from Siem Reap. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Siem Reap?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Siem Reap?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
