A fabulous day out learning about and exploring caves and kiwis.
We took a private tour with Karthik. We modified the tour to include Ruakuri Twin Cave, Otorohanga Kiwi House and Waitomo Caves Museum. Pick up was 6:30 am and drop off was around 6 pm. A long day and we wondered if Karthik would keep us engaged the whole time. Well he did! It was a fabulous day out. He shared so much information with us we couldn’t keep up. He knew people at the various places we stopped who added to what he told us. We selected Ruakuri Cave rather than the Waitomo Cave because my husband uses a mobility scooter. Waitomo has stairs which he could not navigate. Karthik said he prefers Ruakuri because it has more glowworms. I don’t know if he is right but we saw lots of them. At the kiwi house, after our eyes adjusted to the darkness and with some help by Karthik, we saw a kiwi. The organization raises them and then introduces them into the wild. The Museum of the Caves is small but very informative. Our tour included lunch. We stopped at a nice restaurant and could order anything on the menu. The food was delicious. We would highly recommend this tour with this company.
Response from the operator: Kia Ora Jo Ellen, Wow – what an incredible review! Thank you so much for taking the time to share your wonderful experience with us. We're absolutely thrilled to hear that your custom tour with Karthik turned out to be such a memorable and fulfilling day! It’s fantastic to know that every moment of your journey—from the glow-filled Ruakuri Cave to the special encounter at the Kiwi House and the fascinating insights at the Waitomo Caves Museum—left such a lasting impression. We love curating personalised experiences that reflect our guests’ interests and needs, and your kind words reaffirm why we do what we do. Karthik is truly one of a kind—his passion for storytelling, local connections, and deep knowledge of the region always bring our tours to life, and we're so happy he kept you engaged from dawn till dusk! We’re also delighted that the restaurant stop hit the mark—it’s so important to us that every element of the day feels seamless and enjoyable. Thank you once again for trusting ExperienceKart to be a part of your New Zealand adventure. We would absolutely love to welcome you back again for more unforgettable moments. Glowworm Caves Tour
ExperienceKart were so great from start to finish. We were able to book a last minute private tour 18hrs prior to leaving! We were lucky enough to have Karthik as our driver and guide for the day. He was so knowledgeable and pointed out all the wonderful sites along the drive and was able to answer any questions we had about NZ. The transition to the glowworms caves was seamless and Karthik guided us through to our tour and then waited to meet us afterwards. I cannot rate this experience high enough and thanks to Karthik the experience was made even better.

Waitomo Glowworm & Ruakuri Twin Cave Experience
Brilliant experience, Initially had booked one just one cave experience but so happy Karthik advised us about doing the two caves as they are completely different experiences but in very close proximity to each other. Karthik was a welcoming and friendly tour guide and the gift bag was a lovely touch! Highly recommend this company for any trips. Lorraine and Jamie
Response from the operator: Kia Ora Lorraine & Jamie, Thank you very much for your kind words and choosing to book with ExperienceKart and we are so glad that you enjoyed visiting both caves of Waitomo, they are spectacular in their own way! We also are very humbled reading your reviews of our guide and we look forward to hosting you again in the near future! Safe travels and kindest regards!

Why this scores 50
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland cost?
+
Prices start at $571 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland take?
+
Plan for about 8 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 50 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable nightlife in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland?
+
No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.
Is Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 8-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 8-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Waitomo Glowworm Caves - Private Tour From Auckland start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
