Unbelievable experience and well run
If you love the natural world and are visiting Auckland, going on the Spellbound glowworm tour is well worth the time. Be aware, it's a full day because the caves are about 2.5 hours away so you have at least a 5 hour round trip. We had tours of 2 caves which, combined, lasted around 2.5 hours. Our guide was Ross, who was fantastic at what he did. Easy to understand and with a good sense of humor, he made the tour fun and educational. If you are a nature lover, this is an awe-inspiring must-do tour. We were visiting from America and visiting here was a once in a lifetime trip. The tour is aptly named Spellbound because everyone on the tour truly was. It was a sight my wife and I will remember for the rest of our lives. I have also, in my short 71 years of living, never met another person in the US who has experienced this natural phenomenon. I also have to tip my hat to our tour driver, Takahiro. He was also wonderful to meet and talk to with conversations that made a long trip seem much shorter. His knowledge added to our overall experience. This, truly, was a tour of a lifetime. We enjoyed it immensely and would strongly advise people to take the tour, especially if nature holds a special place in your heart.
Response from the operator: Hi Bruce, We are glad you enjoyed the Spellbound Glowworm tour the other day. It is truly a spectacular display and one of my favorite tours in the North Island. It was a pleasure meeting you and Claudia. Your warmth and thoughtfulness made my job easy. Look forward to welcoming you again in the future. Thank you, Takahiro

A glowing review
A glowing review If you wanted to see the Glowworms, then this trip won't disappoint. They claim Spellbound has more worms than the other tour...i cant verify. But i can verify that you can take pictures...would be best with a good camera. The extra cave for part 2 is great as well. I recommend. In fact, there was a younger man who had this tour as a bucket list item, and it brought tears to his eyes, knowing that he finally had seen them.
Response from the operator: Thank you for the glowing review! We’re so pleased to hear that the experience lived up to your expectations and that you enjoyed both parts of the cave. It’s great that you were able to capture the moment as well—having the chance to take photos is something many guests really appreciate. That’s a beautiful story about the young man—moments like that are exactly why we love what we do. Thank you again for your recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back someday!

Great Glow Worm Experience
I had read reviews from different caves and decided on this because the reviews said you have more time in the cave for your eyes to adjust so you can see the glow worms better. I have to agree. I loved this tour because it’s small groups of 12 people, meaning less light pollution from phone screens. The operator of the is top notch, very accommodating, super friendly and helpful. Highly encourage this activity with this company.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your thoughtful review! We're really glad you chose us and that the extra time in the cave made a difference in seeing the glowworms at their best. Keeping our groups small is something we value, so it’s great to hear you enjoyed the more intimate experience. We truly appreciate your kind words about our team—it means a lot. Thanks again for the recommendation, and we hope to welcome you back for another adventure in the future!

Great experience
Beautiful. This included a two cave hikes and a boat ride, waterfall sounds, photo opportunities, eel feeding, mountain/cliff side sheep, bird and goat fossils, and plenty of glow worms looking like a starry night. The tour guide is knowledgeable. Between caves, we had a coffee/hot cocoa break. Disclaimer: Minimal cell phone reception.
Response from the operator: Thank you so much for sharing your wonderful experience! We’re delighted you enjoyed the cave hikes, boat ride, and all the unique sights along the way. We appreciate your note about the cell reception — nature’s beauty is best enjoyed unplugged! Hope to see you again on another adventure soon.

Wow!
This was the only glow worm tour we have done (many locals recommended spellbound to us) and we were not disappointed. Besides being an amazing visual experience, the guide was personable, knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. I would definitely do this again.
Response from the operator: Dear Richard Thank you so much for your kind words! We're thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the glow worm tour and had a great experience with our guide. We would love to welcome you back for another adventure in the future! Navi tours

Why this scores 67
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Auckland.
How much does Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland cost?
+
Prices start at $236 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Auckland usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland take?
+
Plan for about 10 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Auckland is not rushed.
Is Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 67 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 5 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Auckland, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 10-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland?
+
Around 2 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Auckland can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Auckland and add a light layer if any part of the 10-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Waitomo Spellbound Glowworm Caves Small Group Tour from Auckland start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Auckland within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Auckland?
+
On Outty we rank every Auckland experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Hobbiton & Waitomo Caves Guided Day Trip from Auckland incl lunch, Hobbiton Movie Set Small Group Tour with Cheeky Kiwi Travel, Hobbiton & Waitomo Glowworm Caves Tour with Lunch from Auckland. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Auckland?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Auckland?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
