    Private Car to the Caves

Chris was our driver and he took very good care of us. My husband and I were the only two passengers so there was a lot of room in his large, clean and comfortable SUV. Chris made sure we knew what to expect at every step. On the way to the caves, we stopped at a pleasant cafe for a buffet lunch. We continued on to the caves, he made sure we joined the tour on time, then waited for us at the exit after our tour. (He doesn't go on the actual cave tour or into the cafe with you.) The glowworm caves were interesting but very dark, of course, and I got a little unnerved a couple of times at how dark it really was. But I did not get claustrophobic like I thought I might, and the group is fairly large and you all stick closely together. A guide accompanies you through the cave, providing commentary and eventually you all get into a small boat to see all the glowworms and it is required that you not make any noise while in the boat, lest you disturb the glowworms. Someone in our group forgot and started talking and was promptly reprimanded, but in a nice way. There is a gift shop at the end of the tour, as well as refreshment stands and restrooms. All in all, I'm glad we took the tour, and I would recommend going with this company, and particularly Chris, if you want to have a good experience without having to go on a bus or having to wait in long lines.

Response from the operator: Dear Patti, Thank you so much for taking the time to share such a detailed and thoughtful review of your experience with Black Car Transfers & Tours. We’re delighted to hear that you and your husband enjoyed your private journey to the Waitomo Glowworm Caves. It’s wonderful to know that Chris took great care of you throughout the day, ensuring everything was smooth, comfortable, and well-timed. We pride ourselves on offering a personalised experience, and we’re glad the spacious vehicle and relaxed pace made your trip even more enjoyable. The café stop and seamless coordination with the cave tour are all part of creating a stress-free and memorable outing. We also appreciate your honest insights about the cave experience itself—it's true that the darkness can feel quite immersive! We're pleased to hear that despite that, you felt comfortable and were able to enjoy the magical glowworm display. It really is a unique and special experience, especially during the quiet boat ride under the illuminated cave ceiling. Thank you again for your recommendation and kind words about Chris. It means a lot to us that you valued the private, hassle-free nature of the tour—without the crowds or long waits. We hope to welcome you back again on another adventure in New Zealand. Warm regards, Kris & the Team Black Car Transfers & Tours

It was a great trip. We...

It was a great trip. We enjoyed seeing the glow worms and our driver Kris was amazing. Not only was he a good driver, but he also very nice and easy to talk to. When we headed back to Auckland he gave us suggestions of things to do based on what all we had talked about that we had already done in NZ. We took his suggestions and asked to be dropped off at Mt. Eden. Kris was right, very nice view and we got some nice pictures. Then we walked to the Winter Garden, which was another of his suggestions. Had a great day and would definitely book with him again if we are ever back in NZ.

Response from the operator: Thank you so much, Lori and Michael, for your wonderful review and for choosing “Black Car Transfers and Tours” for your Waitomo Glowworm Caves private tour. We’re delighted to hear you had such a great day and truly enjoyed the glowworms. Kris will be thrilled to know his driving, friendly conversation, and local insights helped make your experience even more special. We love that his suggestions led you to Mt Eden for those beautiful views and on to the Winter Gardens, what a perfect way to finish the day. It means a lot to us that you would book with us again if you return to New Zealand. We’d be honoured to look after you on your next visit and help create more memorable experiences.

    Nice trip

Kris was very attentive and took good care of us. The caves were very interesting. Nice tour . The lunch was a buffet lunch and very tasty. Kris took us on a drive through the city too as we only had one day in port. Very nice trip

Response from the operator: Kia ora Kirsti and thank you so much for your lovely review! It was an absolute pleasure having you onboard for your Waitomo Glowworm Cave experience. I’m very glad to hear you enjoyed the caves, the buffet lunch, and that we could make the most of your limited time in port by including a scenic drive through Auckland as well. We always aim to take great care of our guests, especially those visiting for just a day, so they can see as much as possible at a relaxed pace with comfort and ease. Thank you again for choosing Black Car Transfers and Tours. Safe travels and we hope to welcome you back to New Zealand again in the future!

    Great Tour!

What an excellent tour , we chose a private tour with black car tours. The narrative of our guide was a constant companion as to the history of New Zealand with present day New Zealand as we were driven to the caves. The cave itself is surrounded by bushes and has underground streams, it was a starry experience as we glided in the boat amongst other tourists. Looking at the glowing tiny worms on the cave walls and roof. Awesome experience!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much for your wonderful feedback! We’re thrilled you enjoyed your private Waitomo Glowworm Caves tour and the stories shared along the way. It’s always a joy to showcase New Zealand’s beauty and history to our guests. The glowworms truly are a magical sight, and we’re glad you experienced them in comfort. We look forward to welcoming you back for another memorable adventure soon!

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Auckland?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
