About this experience

Come hungry. Spend a day seeing Ulaanbaatar through the places, food, and stories that make it home for me. We'll start at Sukhbaatar Square and walk through the everyday side of Ulaanbaatar, beyond the usual sightseeing route. You'll see local markets, schoolyards, the railway district, and places most visitors pass without knowing their stories. Along the way, I'll share what growing up here has taught me about the city and everyday Mongolian life. Then we'll come home to my tenth-floor apartment, with the city below. We'll slow down over herbal tea and learn Shagai, a traditional Mongolian ankle bone game, before heading into the kitchen. You'll roll the dough, cut the noodles, prepare the ingredients, and cook Tsuivan with your own hands, the way it's made in Mongolian homes. By the time we sit down, the meal is yours. You made it. This is a small-group experience with no script and no rush. Just a day of walking, cooking, stories, and everyday life in a Mongolian home.

MEET ME AT SUKHBAATAR SQUARE — I'll be at the Sukhbaatar statue with a Serey Travel sign. We'll meet here and begin our walk. SEE THE ULAANBAATAR I KNOW — Walk around 7 km through neighborhoods few visitors see. We'll pass markets, schoolyards, the railway district where I sold soda as a kid, and the park where my family gathered every Children's Day. I'll share the stories behind these places. COME HOME WITH ME — We'll arrive at my tenth-floor apartment overlooking the city. We'll slow down over herbal tea and learn Shagai, a traditional Mongolian ankle bone game. COOK TSUIVAN TOGETHER — Into the kitchen. You'll roll the dough, cut the noodles, prepare the ingredients, and cook Tsuivan yourself, just as I learned to make it at home. SHARE THE MEAL YOU CREATED — By the time we sit down, the meal is yours. You made it. We'll share it around the table. Would recommend 100%

It felt like visiting a friends house. Idar is a very warm person, he opens his home to his guests and makes it a very comfortable experience. He's very knowledgeable, he could answer all the questions I had about Mongolia and it's culture. I was alone during the tour that day but felt very safe as a solo female traveler. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants to experience something outside the generic tourist experience.

Response from the operator: Sabi, thank you so much for your lovely review. I’m especially happy that the day felt like visiting a friend’s home. It was a real pleasure spending your last day in Ulaanbaatar together and hearing about your travels around Mongolia. Wishing you many more wonderful journeys ahead!

10/10 local experience!

My group booked this experience with Ider at the last minute and he was incredibly accommodating. The tour was easily one of the highlights of our trip, giving us a small glimpse into how locals live in Ulaanbaatar. We explored neighborhoods and markets we never would have discovered on our own, and ended the tour making a homey, delicious national dish: tsuivan. The best travel experiences are the ones that leave a lasting mark, and I've already been inspired to recreate this dish now that I'm back home in the States. Thank you Ider for your warm hospitality!

Response from the operator: Thank you so much, Jules. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this review and these photos. I’m especially glad that Tsuivan inspired you to make it back home. I hope it brings back some good memories of your time in Ulaanbaatar.

Great tour!

I went on a day tour with a Ider yesterday and had a wonderful experience. He was very knowledgeable and spoke perfect English. We walked through the city and explored the local markets before visiting his home, where we played traditional games and cooked together. It felt personal, authentic and relaxed. Overall, a lovely day and definitely excellent value for both the money and time spent. Highly recommended!

Response from the operator: Thank you, Daniela. I’m very grateful for the review, and even more so for the photo and four little videos you shared with me. They captured our day so well, and I’ll enjoy having them as a reminder of our time together.

A Warm and Authentic Taste of Ulaanbaatar!

A fantastic and very personal way to experience Ulaanbaatar. Our guide, Ider, picked us up and was friendly, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic throughout. He showed us a unique local side of UB, including areas most visitors would never normally see. We were then warmly welcomed into his family home, where we shared traditional games and stories before cooking a delicious local dish together. A huge thank you to Ider and family for opening both their city and their home to us! Hope to see you again on another tour for the north part of the country !

Response from the operator: Thank you, Mike. Your review really touched me. I’m so glad you and Jessi came to spend the day with me. I really enjoyed our time together, and I’m grateful for the conversations, the laughs, and the time we shared at home. I’d be very happy to see you both again, and I hope we get to explore the north together someday.

Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Ulaanbaatar.

How much does Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home cost?

+

Prices start at $99 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Ulaanbaatar usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home take?

+

Plan for about 5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Ulaanbaatar is not rushed.

Is Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 68 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 15 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Ulaanbaatar, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home?

+

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 10. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 5-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home?

+

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Ulaanbaatar can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Ulaanbaatar and add a light layer if any part of the 5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Ulaanbaatar Walking Tour & Cooking Class in a Mongolian Home start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Ulaanbaatar within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Ulaanbaatar?

+

On Outty we rank every Ulaanbaatar experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Genghis Khan Statue+Terelj Park+CamelRide+Eagle, A day trip to Terelj National Park and Statue of Chinggis Khan, BEST 5* Chinggis Khaan Airport UBN Ulaanbaatar Transfer Taxi 24/7. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Ulaanbaatar?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Ulaanbaatar?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
