Great tour and even better guide!

We recently spent a few days in Istanbul while on a cruise vacation. On our first day there, we and another couple hired a local guide so we could see things not offered in the ship’s shore excursions. Our guide was Kemal Aslan, and he was incredible! There was a set tour itinerary, but he was happy to adjust it for us because we were going to see some of the same places during a shore excursion the following day. He added a few other things for us to do instead. He was very patient and helpful when one of us needed a little extra time to get around. When The tour was over, he even took the time to guide us to a fantastic restaurant near our ship so we could get some dinner before reboarding. He gave us more time to experience the things we were most interested in and let us move quickly past things we weren’t as interested in. The best things about Kemal were his personality, his knowledge, and his care for his customers. Spending the day with Kemal was just like hanging out with an old friend. He was relaxed, laid-back and easy to chat with. We enjoyed being around him and seeing Istanbul through his eyes. At the start of the tour, he asked how much of the history we were interested in, and he would adjust his descriptions based on that. We told him we were eager to learn as much history and culture as he could share, and he had a lot of information to offer. He even showed us a couple of “hidden” things along the way, such as famous names scribbled in the Hagia Sophia. Finally, he was refreshingly honest. He mentioned places to avoid when shopping and where to go instead. He also shared information on how not to overpay when shopping. As a former jeweler, he even told us how to know if Zultanite (the local gemstone) was real or fake when shopping for one. He gave us so much helpful information about what to expect while on our own during our stay in Istanbul. By the end of the day the four of us were all highly impressed by Kemal and were very glad that we had decided to book this private tour instead of one of the cruise line’s shore excursions. We learned a lot and had a lot of fun, plus we got to see a lot more than we had expected, including an underground cistern that is less well-known and therefore less crowded than the famous Basilica Cistern. This cistern also had informative exhibits to check out while in it. We highly recommend seeking him out as your personal tour guide if you are going to Istanbul and want to see the sights in an organized and efficient, yet fun and informative way.

Response from the operator: Thank you very much for choosing our services. We are very happy to hear that you had great time with our tour guide Kemal :) We all hope to see you again in Turkey with a longer trip..

    Don't spend more!

First of all, airport pickup was offered to me over the phone, which turned out to be false because the day before the guide informed me that they didn't pick up from that point, so I paid USD$40 for transportation. The guide didn't seem friendly or pleasant at all. Some guides make you fall in love with the city, but this wasn't the case here. I don't think it's worth paying more than USD$60 for something you can do on your own. Entering the Blue Mosque is free, and there's plenty of material to read or watch on Google or YouTube. If you visit Hagia Sofia you need to pay USD$30 cash per person and $50 for the palace. You don't need a guide for this, so save yourself this extra cost.

Response from the operator: Thank you for your valuable feedback. It is clearly mentioned that the tour includes Pick Up from the centerally located HOTELS, and not from the Airport. We are sorry that you could not enjoy the trip. We will keep improving our services. Kind Regards

Ali Faik Anayurt best Tourguide Istanbul

Ali Faik Anayurt was the best tourguide i ever met. He told us a lot of magnificent storys of the region. A lot of Sidestory, we never feel bored. His speech is clear, pleasant and he had a beautiful way to talk about the historical storys, i felt i was sent back to this time. He really took care of everybody. Especially the information about the local specialitys, danger and how to get to which place if we are on the move by ourself created a wonderfull welcomed atmosphere. He had always a well prepared answer for every question. He is a genius guide. I really recommend everybody to ask at the company City of Sultans Day Tours if you can book this guide. Tip: Pls dont be ashamed to give a big tip if someone gives you a unique experience. This is how I will welcome to a new foreign City. With kind regards Daniel and Johanna

Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Istanbul.

How much does Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day cost?

    +

Prices start at $10 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Istanbul usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day take?

    +

Plan for about 7 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Istanbul is not rushed.

Is Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 57 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4/5 across 3 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Istanbul, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 7-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Istanbul can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Istanbul and add a light layer if any part of the 7-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Top Highlights of Istanbul in 1 Day start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Istanbul within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Istanbul?

    +

On Outty we rank every Istanbul experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Best of Istanbul 1, 2 or 3-Day Private Guided Istanbul Tour, Istanbul Luxury Bosphorus Yacht Cruise with Asian Side Stop, ISTANBUL BEST: Iconic Landmarks Full Day PRIVATE Guided City Tour. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Istanbul?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Istanbul?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
