    2. St. Peter's Square

St. Peter’s Square in is one of the most famous (and certainly one of the most holy!) sights in the world. It was designed in the 17th century by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who was known as the most accomplished architect in Rome at the time. Pope Alexander VIII, who commissioned the piazza, asked Bernini to emphasize St. Peter’s importance as “the gateway to Heaven” and the architect implemented the request beautifully. He divided the square into a smaller trapezoidal area adjoining the Basilica and an oval main part, which together create a ground plan in the shape of a giant keyhole.

    3. St. Peter's Basilica

The view from the top of St. Peter's Dome is hailed far and wide as the best panorama of Rome. From these heights you will also be able to gaze over the whole of Vatican City, with its splendid gardens. This is 360° of pure magic as the Eternal City stretches to the hills beyond, and your guide will help you spot many a famous roof and dome, from the Pantheon, to Castel Sant'Angelo and more.

120 minutes here · Admission included

    4. The Vatican Grottoes

Known by a number of names, Vatican Crypts, Vatican Grottoes, or the catchy 'Vatacombs', this is the enormous underground cemetery below St. Peter's that houses the hallowed tombs of various popes, martyrs, kings and other faithful that the central church in Catholicism has collected over its millennia of history. You can even see a few columns of the original St. Peter's Basilica built by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century AD.

Best of the Best - Lived up to its name

When my wife and I were planning our "bucket list" trip to Rome the top of our to do list was a visit to The Vatican. Having looked at many options for guided tours we came across the What a Life Tours "Best of the Best " 3 hour small group tour which seemed to fit everything we wanted to do - skip the queues, visit the Vatican museums, the Sistine Chapel and St Peters Basilica. Elaine, our friendly and amusing guide, shared her wide ranging knowledge of the Vatican's history and treasures in a way that was informative without being overpowering, all the time guiding us through the crowds and getting us to the most advantageous viewing points to fully appreciate the splendour and intricacies of the architecture, artwork and sculptures of all 3 buildings. We would have no hestition in recommending this tour.

Response from the operator: Dear Guest, We greatly appreciate the recommendation and are delighted to hear that the tour was everything you had hoped for! Just to note, the service you left this review for is our Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group, whilst the tour you participated in is the Skip-the-Line Vatican Sistine Chapel & St. Peter's | Small Group, which includes the 3 sites you listed in your review! Nevertheless, thank you for including us in knocking another item off your bucket list, and we'd be more than happy to be a part of knocking more items off your future bucket lists! Continued safe travels ahead, and all the very best! Kind regards, Carima

Like going on a tour given by your friend from Rome.

Very personable, on time, called ahead, tons of knowledge and even had answers to the random questions from a 9-year old.

Response from the operator: Dear Joseph_Z, Thank you for your kind review! We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your experience. In an effort to respect both our guests' time and the Vatican's schedule, we always adhere to the specified start time of our tours, so we're glad you appreciated our punctuality and courtesy in calling ahead. It's wonderful to know that your guide's knowledge and enthusiasm helped bring the history and stories of the Vatican to life. We're especially pleased that their openness and willingness to engage with every member of your group, including answering your little one's many questions, helped make the experience even more enjoyable and personalized for your family. Thank you for choosing to tour with us, and we hope to welcome you back again in the future! Kind regards, Carima

The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Rome.

How much does The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group cost?

    +

Prices start at $94 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Rome usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group take?

    +

Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Rome is not rushed.

Is The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 60 out of 100, which we label "Worth a Look". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.6/5 across 14 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Rome, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group?

    +

Around 5 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Rome can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Rome and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does The Ultimate Basilica Tour with Dome & Crypts | Small Group start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Rome within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Rome?

    +

Rome runs on skip-the-line access. The Colosseum underground, the Vatican before opening, and the catacombs south of the walls all require a licensed operator, and the price gap between the good ones and the rest is smaller than you would expect. We rank by guide credentials, group size and how reliably the promised access actually materialises. On Outty we rank every Rome experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Rome Pasta and Tiramisu Class: Ravioli, Fettuccine & Fine Wine 5*, Pasta Making & Wine Tasting with Dinner in Frascati from Rome, Rome: Pizza & Tiramisu or Gelato Class with Flowing Fine Wine 5*. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Rome?

    +

April, May, September and October. August is hot and half the city is shut. Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Rome?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
