    • Suitable for all physical fitness levels
    • Hotel pickup and drop-off are included only within the listed pickup areas. Pickup outside the defined service area is not included.
    • Please bring warm clothing and suitable footwear. Mountain temperatures can be much lower than in Funchal.
    • Mountain weather can change quickly, and clear views, sunset colours or visibility cannot be guaranteed. The tour normally operates when access is open and conditions are safe. If conditions at Pico do Arieiro are not favourable, an alternative viewpoint such as Palheiro or another suitable location may be used.
    • Weather, limited visibility, or use of an alternative viewpoint do not automatically qualify for a refund if the main tour operates.
    • The optional Stairway to Heaven walk is self-guided and subject to official access rules, trail conditions, weather, visibility and availability on the day. Any required trail/access fees are not included.
    • This walk is not guaranteed and is not required in order to enjoy the sunset visit. Inability to do the optional walk does not automatically qualify for a refund if the main tour operates.
    • Return departure is normally around 30 minutes after sunset. Please do not continue further along the trail, as this may make it impossible to return to the vehicle on time.

    Sunset at Pico do Arierio

This was an amazing trip. We got to see the beautiful sunset and took some lovely photos. Advice to people visiting, wrap up warm. We under estimated how cold it would be as it was so hot in Funchal.

Perfect pick up and drop off for Pico do Arierio!!

This was absolutely perfect! Just as it described. Pick up and drop off! You do not need to do a guided hike! George picked us up on time at our hotel and drove us, along with other people, to Pico do Arierio - stairway to heaven. We lucked out and had great weather for the sunset hike! We all finished early, and he drove us back and dropped us off! Easy peasy!! Is definitely recommend having a driver drop you off and pick you up, so you don’t have to deal with permits and the crazy, steep, windy roads!! 10/10!

Beware that company does not follow through with the original listing and promises.

The weather was really poor for our tour. In the listing, please notice that it says alternate hiking sites will be available if the weather is uncooperative. It was so foggy you literally couldn't see your hand in front of your face. No other hiking spots were offered - we just got stuck at the top of the mountain in deep, thick fog. I contacted the tour operator at least five times after the tour and there was zero response from the company. The owner company completely ghosted me and refused to engage in any kind of communication I do not recommend this tour as they do not live up to their advertised listing. Thankfully, our credit card stepped up to the plate where this unscrupulous company did not. Beware!

Response from the operator: Thank you for your feedback. However, we would like to clarify an important point, as the description of the tour appears to have been misunderstood. Our listing does not state that an alternative hike will be provided whenever visibility is poor. It explains that we may use an alternative sunset location if weather conditions make the planned location unsafe. On the day of your tour there was fog at Pico do Arieiro, but the hiking route remained available and the conditions did not require us to relocate the activity on safety grounds. Unfortunately, mountain weather and visibility can change very quickly and cannot be guaranteed by any tour operator. We therefore cannot agree with the statement that we failed to provide something that was advertised or promised, as no alternative hike was included in the tour description. We also consider the description of our company as “unscrupulous” to be unjustified. We take the accuracy of our listings and the experience of our guests seriously and always operate according to the activity described and the conditions encountered on the day.

    Amazing sunset views

Our driver and guide was João and he couldn’t have been more friendly or helpful. He was incredibly knowledgable, took us to and showed us the best places to see the sunset and gave us a couple extra stops. He even dropped us off and an amazing place to get some amazing burgers at 23:00! Couldn’t recommend this experience more, well worth the time and money for an unforgettable adventure. Thank you João!

Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Funchal.

How much does Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike cost?

    +

Prices start at $53 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Funchal usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike take?

    +

Plan for about 3.5 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Funchal is not rushed.

Is Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike worth it?

    +

It holds an Outty Ranking of 64 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.4/5 across 89 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Funchal, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike?

    +

Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.

Is Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike suitable for kids and families?

    +

Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3.5-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.

How far in advance should I book Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike?

    +

Around 31 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Funchal can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Funchal and add a light layer if any part of the 3.5-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Sunset at Pico do Arieiro with Optional Stairway to Heaven Hike start and how do I get there?

    +

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Funchal within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Funchal?

    +

On Outty we rank every Funchal experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Jeep Tour Amazing West to Natural Pools -Full-Day, Porto Moniz, Seixal, Fanal Forest, Cliff Skywalk in Open Roof 4X4, West Tour-Fanal Forest & Porto Moniz Natural Pools Small Groups. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Funchal?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Funchal?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
