At Kelaniya, about 10km to the northeast of Colombo, in Sri Lanka Kelaniya Temple believed to have been built in the era before the chronologically recorded history of Sir Lanka (since 543 B.C) was renovated by Prince Uttiya, brother of King Devanampiyatissa following the arrival Arahat Mahinda in 307 BC. According to the Mahawansa, King Devanampiyatissa’s brother Uttiya renovated the vihara for the first time. Prince Uttiya also built the first-ever residential quarters of the Buddhist monks (Sanghawasa) there. The ancient temple was destroyed time and again by the Dravidian invaders from Southern India. Each time the temple had been reconstructed. The medieval temple was destroyed by the Portuguese in 1510 and reconstructed by King Kirthi Sri Rajasingha.

The Viharamahadevi Park (formerly Victoria Park) is a public park located in Colombo, next to the National Museum in Sri Lanka. It is the oldest and largest park in the Port of Colombo. Situated in front of the colonial-era Town Hall building, the park is named after Queen Viharamahadevi, the mother of King Dutugamunu. The park was built on land donated to Colombo city by Charles Henry de Soysa during the British rule of Sri Lanka and used to be named "Victoria Park" after Queen Victoria. During World War II it was occupied by the British Army with the Australian 17th Brigade based at Victoria Park. Colombo Boy was a terrific tour‼️
Chinthaka was our guide and driver for the Columbia half day tour… he did a brilliant job, educating us about important temples and sites in Colombo. He listened to our desires and did a wonderful job making sure we saw what we wanted to see in Colombo. In fact, he even volunteered to take us that evening to see the lotus Tower while the lights were on. We were very impressed with our experience on this tour🤩

All but shopping
The air conditioned car with guide was perfect for the 4 hour overview of Colombo. Having the company right in the port is a plus as the tuck tuck's take advantage of passengers with inflated rates just for a ride to the main gate. It was too hot for an entire tour in a tuck tuck. We did feel the two shopping stops for gems and tea cut into our tour time by an hour. We agreed to walk back to the ship from Petta market as we wanted to stay there for a bit. Big mistake with the heat and crazy traffic. Just tell them you dont want expensive gems and tea. The Petta market is much more engaging.
