    1. Giragama Tea Factory is one of the oldest in Sri Lanka. The eponymous English "cuppa" might have been somewhat stronger if not for the 1865 coffee blight. Old Ceylon’s up-country plantations were devastated – but not so the spirits of the pioneering planters. They threw in a crop of tea and never looked back. You will visit a tea plantation and observe how the plant is grown and harvested. From here you will travel to a factory and learn about the whole processing procedure and how different types of teas are created.

    2. Gadaladeniya Rajamaha Viharaya with an ancient monastery is found on the flat rock at Diggala in the district of Kandy. According to a inscription there this temple was built by King Buwanekabahu IV in the year 1344. The chief architect of this temple has been a south indian called Ganesvarachari. Therefore this temple is essentially a South Indian design. The main shrine room has seated (in Vajrasana) Buddha Statue under a Makara Thorana and four standing Buddha images. The makara thorana is decorated on both faces with gods such as Brahma, Suyama, Santhusuta, Natha and Maithree, and two attendants.

    Crazy traffic

When I booked my tour to go to the New Giragama Tea factory, I didn’t know that it would fall on a holiday. The traffic was horrific- besides being bumper to bumper, lots of accidents. People driving recklessly and consequently our car hit a car in front of us which took another 15 minutes off my tour. We spent 7 (!!!!!!!!) hours on the road and 15 minutes at the factory. I couldn’t take a tasting menu nor pick leaves on the farm. I just bought 3 packages of tea and we had to go back to the cruise terminal praying that I would miss my ship. It wasn’t planned properly by the provider, they shouldn’t offer this kind of tour on any holiday particularly when it’s outside Colombo requiring about 3.5 hours drive. I could’ve bought a tea in the city instead of paying $155 for being 7 hours on the congested road. Disappointed, extremely disappointed…

Response from the operator: I’m really sorry to hear about your experience—it clearly didn’t go as expected, and I understand your frustration. Your tour took place on April 15th, which is just after the Sinhala and Tamil New Year. This is one of the busiest travel periods in Sri Lanka, with many people returning from their hometowns back to Colombo. Because of this, the roads can become extremely congested, and unfortunately, traffic conditions can be unpredictable, with delays and even accidents occurring more frequently during this time. That said, I completely understand your disappointment, especially since you spent most of your time on the road and had very limited time at the tea factory. This is certainly not the kind of experience we aim to provide. Normally, we try to plan these tours to ensure a comfortable journey and enough time to enjoy the visit, but the holiday traffic on that particular day made it very challenging. We truly appreciate your feedback, and we will take this into account to avoid offering long-distance tours on peak holiday dates in the future. Thank you for bringing this to our attention, and again, we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience caused.

    +

How far in advance should I book Shore Excursion Colombo Port to Kandy & Tea Factory?

    +

Around 1 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Colombo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

    +

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Colombo and add a light layer if any part of the 6-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

What are the best things to do in Colombo?

    +

On Outty we rank every Colombo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Flexi dates on all 5 to 7 days packages for car and English speaking driver, Sri Lanka Personal Tour Driver in private vehicle, 08 Nights in Magical Sri Lanka. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Colombo?

    +

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Colombo?

    +

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

    +

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
