Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque
In the hustle and bustle of Pettah, Colombo’s core commercial district is situated a most striking building, a spiritual haven called Jamiul Alfar Masjid. This mosque is remarkable because the architecture is Indo-Saracenic, incorporating pomegranate-shaped domes. But the most extraordinary feature is that each brick is painted red or white and used in contrasting designs, which gave rise to its common name, the Red Mosque. However, there seems to be a ban on Muslim women to visit the mosque due to religious restrictions. As there have been many who requested a section for the women; there appears to plan for such a section, where women can do their prayers, to be built in the future. Though the red mosque is an Islamic religious facility, visitors from other religions are eagerly welcomed.

Go for the private tour option
There was some discrepancy in the descriptions on Viator. One part indicated the admission to the temple was included and in another section it stated that it was not. It was not a lot of money, but it should be corrected. The guide/driver communicated well and described many of the attractions we were seeing. We asked for a recommendation for a shop that sold Ceylon tea and he took us to a good store that also had tastings. But he then suggested a gem store. Unfortunately we had to go to that store since the other couple on the tour were interested. This is always a problem with a group tour. Next time we'll choose a private tour.

Let Down
Ship was 2 hrs late docking so no one to meet us. Went back on board and ship allowed us courtesy call t office who said they would organise an afternoon tour but only gave us 30 mins to get off ship get on coach to drop us at Port gate 1A. Asked driver to stop there - he drove straight through and stopped way down the road. My husband walked back to Gate 1A no one there. I walk with a stick we are in our late 70s. Had to resort to tuk tuk. Told non-refundable. Never use you again

Why this scores 62
The Outty Ranking is a weighted composite. Here is how this experience performed on each component.
Shore Excursion Colombo City tour: questions travelers ask
Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Colombo.
How much does Shore Excursion Colombo City tour cost?
+
Prices start at $20 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Colombo usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.
How long does Shore Excursion Colombo City tour take?
+
Plan for about 3 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Colombo is not rushed.
Is Shore Excursion Colombo City tour worth it?
+
It holds an Outty Ranking of 62 out of 100, which we label "Solid Choice". That score blends traveler sentiment (4.2/5 across 16 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable last minute in Colombo, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.
Can I cancel or reschedule Shore Excursion Colombo City tour?
+
Yes. Cancel free up to 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside that window the booking is non-refundable, and no-shows are not refunded.
Is Shore Excursion Colombo City tour suitable for kids and families?
+
Yes, all ages are welcome. Families should still weigh the 3-hour running time, and strollers are easier on the earlier, quieter departures.
How far in advance should I book Shore Excursion Colombo City tour?
+
Around 6 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Colombo can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.
What should I bring or wear?
+
Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Colombo and add a light layer if any part of the 3-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.
Where does Shore Excursion Colombo City tour start and how do I get there?
+
The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Colombo within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.
What are the best things to do in Colombo?
+
On Outty we rank every Colombo experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include Flexi dates on all 5 to 7 days packages for car and English speaking driver, Sri Lanka Personal Tour Driver in private vehicle, 08 Nights in Magical Sri Lanka. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.
When is the best time to visit Colombo?
+
Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.
How many days do you need in Colombo?
+
Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.
Do I book through Outty or through the operator?
+
Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
