Beautiful but challenging

Peaks of the Balkans is a very beautiful but at times very challenging hike with steep parts and long stretches of gravel roads where you are completely exposed to the sun. Also, water supply is not always good along the trails so you need to carry plenty of water. We did the hike in early August and decided to take a taxi parts of the stretches to avoid the gravel parts. A lot of others did the same, so that can be recommended. Especially the last 5 km from Theth to Valbona, the first 5 km from Valbona to Çerem (if you take the valley route) and the first part from Çerem to Doberdol. The guest houses will be happy to help you with this and will charge about 10 euro per person. Overall, the friendliness and helpfulness from the people we met, from owners of guest houses to the staff that picked us up in Tirana and drove us to the starting point is worth mentioning. We were also very pleased with Brikena at Choose Balkan who continuously sent us WhatsApp messages to check that we were ok and that we had safely arrived to the guest houses by night. At one point, we wanted to change guest houses and she was super helpful. She was also a hero to arrange luggage transport with short notice so if you get her as your operator, consider yourself lucky!

Great experience !!

We booked the hike online and were assisted very correctly from the beginning, so everything was clear for us with no uncertainties. We got in contact with Brikena who assisted us very smoothly before and also during the hike. She made sure that everything was in order so we could simply concentrate on the hike. We visited Brikena’s office the day before our hike started and went through everything together, which was very reassuring and just nice for us not so experienced hikers. The hike itself was amazing! We enjoyed it a lot, both the hiking and staying in the guesthouses. There was the possibility to have dinner at every place, which was nice after a whole day of hiking. At every place we stayed, we could get a picnic bag for lunch which was also welcome because there are hardly any spots on the road that sell food. The transfers included in the hike were very correct and well organised by Brikena. Great experience!!

Choose Balkans self guided 7 day tour "Peaks of the Balkans"

We felt extremely well taken care of from the start of the trip and all the way through. Our contact, Brikena, was very communicative and made sure we were always all right by checking in regularly to see if we needed anything. We felt the trip was well worth the money and would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a hassle free experience in the "accursed alps". Seven days was just the right length of time for us and Choose Balkans really have a well put together package deal where you get to experience so much more than just the trail. Our stay in Kosovo at the end of the trip was a nice addition after having hiked for six full days. The Guest Houses we stayed at were very accommodating with friendly hosts and left us with great memories of the experience and people we met along the way. Brikena also went above and beyond to make our stays extra special and she had arranged for some unexpected surprises along the way for us (as we did this hike as part of our honeymoon)! Brikena also responded quickly and professionally whenever we needed anything or had a question. We can't recommend the trip and the team at Choose Balkans enough to other travellers!

Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days: questions travelers ask

Practical detail on this experience, plus the wider planning questions for Tirana.

How much does Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days cost?

+

Prices start at $879 per person. The final price depends on the date, the time slot and the number of travelers, and peak weekends in Tirana usually price higher than midweek mornings. Live pricing and remaining availability are confirmed on the booking screen before you pay.

How long does Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days take?

+

Plan for about 168 hours from start to finish, not counting travel to the meeting point. Most travelers leave another 30 minutes on either side so the rest of the day in Tirana is not rushed.

Is Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days worth it?

+

It holds an Outty Ranking of 74 out of 100, which we label "Strongly Recommended". That score blends traveler sentiment (5/5 across 43 reviews), the depth of that review evidence, recent booking momentum, value for money against comparable outdoors in Tirana, and how flexible the cancellation terms are.

Can I cancel or reschedule Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days?

+

No. This experience is sold on a non-refundable basis, so only book a date you are confident about. Similar experiences in the city do offer free cancellation if flexibility matters more than price.

Is Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days suitable for kids and families?

+

The operator sets a minimum age of 12. Older children generally do well here, and families should factor in the 168-hour running time when deciding.

How far in advance should I book Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days?

+

Around 15 people booked this in the last 30 days, so popular slots go early. Two to three weeks ahead is comfortable in shoulder season, while summer weekends and holidays in Tirana can sell out a month out. Same-day spots do open up when other travelers cancel, so it is worth checking if you are already in town.

What should I bring or wear?

+

Bring photo ID, your booking confirmation on your phone, a refillable water bottle and comfortable shoes. Dress for the weather in Tirana and add a light layer if any part of the 168-hour experience runs outdoors or after sunset.

Where does Self - Guided Peaks of the Balkans tour in 7 days start and how do I get there?

+

The exact meeting point and directions are on your voucher once you book, and they sit in central Tirana within reach of public transport. Arrive 15 minutes early: late arrivals are treated as no-shows by most operators.

What are the best things to do in Tirana?

+

On Outty we rank every Tirana experience on the same 0 to 100 scale, and alongside this one the highest scorers right now include From Tirana / Durres: Gamti Mountain and Bovilla lake Day Trip, From Tirana- Hiking Tour to Bovilla Lake & Gamti Mountain, Berat Cooking Class- Traditional Albanian Cooking Class /By Vato. The city page groups everything into most popular, highest reviewed, last minute and family-friendly so you can build a day around what actually delivers.

When is the best time to visit Tirana?

+

Booking patterns follow the same curve: prices and queues climb in peak weeks, while shoulder season gives you better availability on the top-ranked experiences and more room to change plans.

How many days do you need in Tirana?

+

Three full days covers the headline sights without sprinting. A workable rhythm is one anchor experience each morning, such as this one, an unhurried afternoon in a single neighborhood, then a food or nightlife booking in the evening. Five days lets you add a day trip outside the city.

Do I book through Outty or through the operator?

+

Outty ranks and explains the experiences, then hands you to Viator to complete the booking with the operator directly. The price is the same as booking on Viator yourself, and Outty earns an affiliate commission on the referral, which is how the rankings stay free to read.
