Home to just 150 permanent residents, it's a fine place to both play and relax, with access to great beaches and world class biking trails. Copper Harbor is also the launch point for the ferry to Isle Royale National Park.

As you make your way from beach to beach and bay to bay, you are constantly reminded that in it's angriest mood, Lake Superior's waters can be filled with peril and danger. Lighthouses were a literal beacon of safety for the mariners. The 150 year old octagonal lighthouse and museum at Eagle Harbor is quite a charming sight!

Eagle River Falls

If you can’t get to the west coast to see the giant sequoias, you’ll get to see the northern equivalent on a walking trail through the Estivant Pines. The grove has pines that are more than 300 years old and rise up more than 125 feet.

Fort Wilkins State Park
This extraordinarily well-preserved Army fort from 1844 is available to visit, and has local history re-enactors to guide you through. The Army built it to keep the peace between miners and the Indigenous people, but there were really never any problems to speak of. Admission to Fort Wilkins is free, however a Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to Fort Wilkins State Park.

The shore you’ll be driving along is gorgeous thanks to both beautiful volcanic rock formations and stunning expanses of sky and water. This added value to our trip, but wasn’t outstanding
We enjoyed the audio tour for Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula, but having used Shaka Guides in the past, this experience was not quite on par. The tour worked well mechanically, and much of the information offered was useful and interesting, but I would have appreciated more in depth information and recommendations for hikes, waterfalls, and local options. That aspect of the product seemed limited. It was also a bit clunky because we had to use our Google Maps on CarPlay and have the Guide Along running on a phone. Again, Shaka has a technology that allows us to display the map directly to CarPlay. Also, as relevant as copper mining is to the history of the area, much more time could have been devoted to that topic. The importance of the Finnish language to the area could also be much more fleshed out. We would also have appreciated hearing more information about the indigenous peoples, and perhaps insights as to how the UP became part of Michigan rather than Wisconsin. Some of the pronunciations and local word usages were “off”. For example, we don’t call US Route 41 “the 41” as the narrator does. And Wild Bill Mattila would be pronounced MAT-tila in Finnish, rather than Mat-TILA. We also don’t refer to the area as “the yoop” as I heard at one point in the audio. These are small things, but they reduce the authenticity of the audio guide. Utilizing a local researcher and editor would be really helpful. Overall, the Shaka Guides I’m accustomed to seem more deeply researched and offer a higher production quality. This was fine, but given a choice for our next trip — to Sedona - we’ll choose Shaka.

Awesome tour!
