Rising up on the hill in front of us stands Quincy Mine, one of the first major landmarks we'll pass that speaks to the interesting and somewhat turbulent mining history of Copper Island. Eagle Harbor
Eagle Harbor, just ahead, was founded in 1844 right along a strip of pit mines that Indigenous Americans used to mine copper before settlers arrived. No roads went to Eagle Harbor when the copper boom really picked up, so everything had to be shipped in, including supplies and workers.

We're about to drive past Eagle River Falls, one of the best waterfalls in the Keweenaw. You may be able to eke out the fall as you cross the river up ahead but its much nicer to park the car and go and go take a closer look.

Estivant Pines Nature Sanctuary
Estivant Pines and it's one of the last old-growth white pine stands left in the state. You can think of it like the giant sequoias of the north if you'd like.

Fort Wilkins State Park
It was built in 1844 by the Army in order to keep the peace between miners and the Indigenous community.

All the water we see along this drive is the result of fire and ice. An active volcano in the North American Mid-Continent Rift set the stage for Lake Superior.

Not every stop is a win
The cemeteries are a complete waste of time. Between the two there are fewer than twenty headstones and none are for the miners. It's all probably female relatives of affluent individuals in the area. The monastery was ok, the rum raisin brownies were the highlight...the fruit breads, don't bother for the price. The Abbey Cake probably got more flavor from the cloth it was wrapped in than the whiskey. There are much better confectionery options around Keweenaw. Definitely visit the bookstore in Copper Harbor and grab a book off the "books we love" section. I have a new favorite author because of them.

Fantastic! This...
Fantastic! This downloaded tour with a map was our only guide because there was no signal on our phones past Houghton. It was a great tour that highlighted a lot of spots along the drive we would have missed without the tour. It also included stories about the local culture that I really enjoyed. I can still see the highlights and listen to the descriptions in the app..

Very Enjoyable Tour
This was a good self-paced audio tour that gave us a good overview of the Keweenaw peninsula with the opportunity to explore more if we wanted. It was easy to download and set up, and flexible; we did it on two different days because we were staying in Calumet, sort of in the middle. The narrator was good, easy to understand, and entertaining. Our only complaint is that we wish he had given more information about the location of public bathrooms, especially in Copper Harbor where there aren’t many. Would have saved us some time if he had pointed out that the restrooms are located in the visitors’ center, and where it is. Overall, an efficient and enjoyable way to spend our limited time.
