This porcelain became very popular among affluent families such as the European Royals. When the import of Chinese porcelain declined as a result of civil wars in China, the Dutch potteries seized the opportunity and developed their own version of this blue and white porcelain. This resulted in the birth of Delft Blue in the Netherlands. Nowadays, Delft Blue is one of the true Dutch icons.

From the approximately 32 potteries that were founded in the 17th Century, Royal Delft, established in 1653, is the only remaining Delftware factory left in Delft. It is a national heritage and a must-see when visiting Holland! Here, the renowned Royal Delftware is still entirely hand painted according to centuries-old tradition. In 1919 the company was awarded the prefix ‘Royal’ confi rming its special relationship with the Dutch Royal family. For generations the Dutch Royal family have been true admirers of Royal Delftware. Nowadays Royal Delft is not only a factory for Delft Blue and a knowledge institute for ceramics, but also a museum. When visiting Royal Delft you discover the complete history and the production process of Delft Blue and Royal Delft in an audiovisual presentation. You witness a painter at work and are introduced to the other two icons of Delft in the themed chambers: the dining room of Johannes Vermeer, the famous 17th century painter from Delft and the Royal Chambers containing the collection of Orange Ceramics that has been produced over the centuries for the Dutch Royal family. In the museum, you can admire the collection of antique and modern pieces of Delft Blue earthenware and in the factory you can witness the authentic production process. In the showroom a comprehensive collection of hand painted earthenware by Royal Delft and a collection of souvenirs is on show. Royal Delft offers workshops during which you can try your hand at painting Delft Blue. Overlooking the beautiful courtyard the Brasserie serves delicious coffee, tea, lunches and High Teas. Tours are available in various languages.

A dream for anyone who loves blue and white art 💙
Visiting the Royal Delft Museum was a truly special experience for me. As someone with a background in painting and a deep love for blue ink and blue-and-white art, I felt especially connected to this place. The delicate details, traditional Delft Blue designs and the craftsmanship behind each piece were fascinating to see. What impressed me most was realizing how much patience, precision and artistic skill goes into creating these beautiful pieces. I also loved the combination of history, art and craftsmanship. The museum doesn’t simply display beautiful objects; it tells the story behind them and gives visitors a better understanding of the tradition and the people who keep this art alive. From a visitor-experience perspective, I found it very inspiring. It’s a place where art and Dutch cultural heritage come together in a very tangible way. For me, surrounded by all those beautiful shades of blue, it was more than just a museum visit — it felt like stepping into a world I naturally feel drawn to. 💙🎨 Definitely a must-visit for anyone who loves art, craftsmanship, Dutch heritage and, of course, Delft Blue.

Really interesting but tbh the examples in the shop seem to be limited price wise & so disappointedly out of our range
We were visiting The Netherlands to see old friends and decided on the Saturday to venture into Delft. It seemed an obvious choice to pay for tickets into the museum. I used an audio guide whilst other members of our party were happy to wander around reading the information boards which were in Dutch and English. The museum gives you a very good insight into how the Delft pottery came to be and traces its history across the ages. There are some really lovely examples of the porcelain to view along with examples of tile work.

A very good factory museum
It was a a great visit. We were five people and everybody found their interest point, Some the art, some the craftsmanship, some the industry and some the history. this factory museum shows off all aspects of the famous delft ceramics. It is a one and a half hour visit. We did not take a tour (because there wasn't one on the day we were there) but it is very self explanatory. The price is like any museum but there is free parking. Don't miss the inner courtyard.

Okay - long walk from station
Small museum and then took guided factory tour which was ok. 6 Euro shuttle back to station via city centre was the highlight.

Good
This was interesting and I’m glad that I went, but it wasn’t necessarily a highlight of my trip. The garden bistro was charming. The museum itself is very small. I do wish that participating in classes was more accessible for day of purchase. I was sad to miss that option.
